^^^ Oh, Mohammed didn't just own slaves, he also captured people and then enslaved them. In short, he was a vile slave trader. And he wasn't averse to raping his slaves. Of course, Moslems see him as the perfect role model, and so emulate him. Islamic slave traders went on to capture, enslave and export up to 28 million people. Ha! Ha! Except for the fact that the Romans didn't use slaves to build roads in England: it was done by legionnaires.

Remember though , that when the Romans invade a country or region they, ''invited'' the locals to enlist in the Legion. That done said locals were shipped of to a totally different country or region so as there would be nor was any collaboration that might undermine the authority of Rome.
Those that built the English roads were imported labour who were no more than De Facto slaves as were the local Brits who were ''invited'' to join the local work units by the use of assorted and diverse means, those means weren't, ''here's a job and a pension at the end of it for you'' either. Often the expressions having a''whip round'' or ''whipping up enthusiasm'' had a different connotations to those we use nowadays.

First, mea culpa. It's "legionary", not "legionnaire". Unlike slaves, legionaries were paid. The rate was 225 denarii/year during the classic Roman period, and 300 during the reign of Emperor Domitian. And yes, it was "here's a pension at the end of it". Legionaries, after completing 25 years' service (the standard term, of which the last 5 were on light duties) received a piece of land or its monetary equivalent.

Well AyG , upon reading the post above you made I am of to the Legion Club to see if I am eligible for such an extra pension. I presume I maybe as some here tell me I am an old man so possibly that Legion pension could be attached to my plod pension , my small naval pension or my state pension, don't think my private pension would be included and of course other income(s) I have though... Don't really need a piece of land as the family trust has a couple of thousand acres or so of land, however if a piece of land offered was in Londinium I might find that an acceptable offer... Should be or could be a tidy old lump sum too after all this time if my claim is successful, as my equivalent former rank would be around the Praefectus castrorum level.

No need right now CM...lovely beaches and sunshine here in Lerwick....seals and birdwatching aplenty....and always the orcas could be patrolling for a lucky glimpse.

The presence or absence of payment or wages had nothing to do with slavery. Many slaves were paid. It is the compulsion and "ownership" that matter. Many roman legioaires were conscripted......a form of slavery for mi.litaryu purposes. I volunteered in a modern army......still did not stop me being told on the first day they own me.

Indeed. Once in the military and later as a plod, ownership could not be disputed.

Aye orange marches...amusing in the way it is to watch a low grade car crash. Outdated and provocative nonsense. They have potato marches up my way, should they be banned as well? The locals tell me its their heritage, who am I as a lowly dirty smelly ai farang immigrant they are outdated? As an act of solidarity, today I visited Home Fresh Mart, I dumped all their Mcain oven fresh spuds into the klong saen saep, that will teach them for using the racist word farang, but even more, who actually eats that shyte? Tomorrow, the farang lives matter will be protesting outside Maccas, we dont need any of your effin rubbish french fries rubbish.
