In case anyone is interested as to where I've been, I've spent nine months of the last year in Thailand, and it's been fascinating. I'm now back in Scotland and I'll be here for a while as my business needs me.
On my travels through Thailand this time, I spent a lot of time in a village called Phrao - where I was amazed to hear that the Children's Homes in the area have about two thousand kids living in them. It's reckoned that ninety-five percent of the kids are children of the Mountain ( Hill Tribe ) people. I heard stories about the army sweeping up abandoned kids and dropping them off at the homes. Stories about families dropping their kids off until they were of useful age then coming back to collect them. I could go on.
As far as I can see the whole Children's Home "industry," is chaos in the north - is it the same in other parts of Thailand?

I know we all grumble about Blighty, but we should be thankful we were born there/here.

Correct - I was asked if I had time to accompany the army on one of their sweeps - I didn't. I'll do it the next time I'm in country. According to the people I was talking to, the level of abandonment is outrageous. They introduced me to a young boy who had been left in a field by his parents with his two brothers. It was four days before they were found - three kids under the age of six. His two brothers are in a psychiatric care unit near Chiang Mai, traumatized by the experience.
Man - heart breaking.

Hello Blether! Nice to see that avatar back posting again.
On your topic, children stealing from Issan villages has been around for a long time. Kids often go out and roam the village with friends, so by the time they are noticed missing, they 're long gone.
Life can be seen as very cheap in Thailand.

One thing, at least they are picked up and housed. At least they are in a hospital or facility.
It does show that country is making progress. Wouldn't have happened years ago.

Yes - that's true. My particular interest is the Mountain People element - that's why I'm inquiring about the state of play in the rest of the country.

But still too many just get dropped of at the local Wat or be abandoned in a bag on a tree as the missus has showed me a few minutes ago on her LINE thing....people get more aware of it and exchange informations...though a step in the right direction...but still a long way to go But every journey begins with the first step....

It starts with a well balanced economy with far better distribution of wealth. Until that sorts out nothing's really going to change.

You're right but the so called right balanced economy is everywhere fading away...the gap between poor and wealthy get bigger and bigger especially in the west...though what chance has a country who never knew another way??? As long as success is not based on skills but rather of who you know or status nothing will change....

To be honest though, most of our so called "developed countries". Have serious social problems
Many are regressing. The good Ole USA for example has Detroit, oh dear. UK isn't any better either

It is all heading down the pan. However I think recessions/depressions are very personal things. You're either affected or you aren't and if you're not you don't really know.

I've not seen this in Thailand....but those of us who escaped the poverty circle ;n the UK are reluctant to get involved....I think mostly because its a scene which we know all too well and while including some deserving....always has its leeches too.
In Thailand I assume its worse....hardly bares thinking about. Ugh.

What about sex education and contraception? From puberty. Some think that a girl of eleven or twelve can never get pregnant - of course she can. And boys should be taught to respect girls and not just use them as a plug for their penises and if the poor child gets pregnant take responsibility for the girl and child.
But then i live in a la la land with angels and unicorns and butterflies fluttering around green meadows.
