A lot of the problem has to do with the Thai attitude to abortion. Most have to seek shady clinics when this should be freely available especially for girls under 16.

But with proper education and contraception they would not have to go through the trauma of abortion.

And if the boys would get held responsible for their offsprings ...they would cover their little bananas in three layers of condoms...

Education in general is the key to escaping the cycle of poverty - at least for some kids. Managing to keep them in school is a major problem, when the families need the kids to work the farm / sell themselves / generally earn money. Finding even relatively small amounts of money to pay for the kids' education, or to support them in school comes low on the agenda compared with everyday needs.
I'm associated with some folk who are running charities that finance improvements to at least one school catering for kids from hill villages, and am sponsoring a couple of kids - 600 baht a month pays for daily bits and pieces for them - snacks mostly, to keep them fed at school. If anyone is prepared to actually do something to help, as opposed to write about it in the forum, get in touch and I will give you details of the people to contact to arrange sponsorship... 600 baht/person/month...c'mon that's less than a Chang a day. Y'all can't be THAT hard up!

Sadly patsycat...the world isn't a perfect place. Sex education in LOS starting at puberty ain't gonna happen as it seems to be a taboo subject for schools to teach. Please don't ask me why because I don't know & reckon it's simply an Asian "thing". Same for respecting girls...no guy out here really respects a gorl...it's not manly in their thinking. The list can go on but it's Easter Monday & a nice day...no need to get depressed.

I been up in the Fang area, onto Doi Angkang. The conditions people have to live in are bloody awful. In one village on the top (forget the name now) I spoke to village elders who had been born there and never been able to leave...60 years old some were.. The Thais should of done something to help them asimmilate.
No good "hearing stories" OP...get up there and see for youself.
@nigelfarage (what a crap name you gone & picked, man) Having seen them raggy-arsed kids up there, it make you want to do something, so can you message me some details of this sponsourship stuff? Ta.

Y'all can't be THAT hard up! ...shouldn't this support be a function of local government? Why would it fall to foreigners to aid, educate and generally assist the locals when in many cases it is their own culture that is holding them back: attitudes toward women, personal dignity, responsibility and, yes, social enlightenment go against what they are exposed to in their own religion (assuming they're not Muslim or Christian)...do-gooder foreigners can set a shaming example of the way forward, but cannot, I suspect, overcome social inertia...

In any sane and caring society it would be the function of goverment. That ain't Thaland.
There own culture holding them back?? What bloody ignorance! Go and do a bit of research on the history of Lahu people, or Lisu, or Hmong, or any of the other groups. they're all at the same shitty end of the stick, ignored by the gov't, isolated, left on crappy land up in the hills.
You seriously think they CHOSE to live like that? Jesus!
Some people need a brain implant. Make sure you're at the front of the queue, squire.

Good to give back, if you can help.
Always IMO vet any charity to ensures it's run for the benefit of the people it's set up for, as opposed for the benefit of the ones who run it. There have been some right dodgy shits abusing here positions, as are well documented.

Last year I gave my lot £100k to keep the kids going and build something more up for the future and they're actually doing a good job which is a pleasant surprise. I'm not rich by the way, I live like a diseased dog and don't have much, but I don't really need much either.

There own culture holding them back? You seriously think they CHOSE to live like that? Jesus! Some people need a brain implant. Make sure you're at the front of the queue, squire. I'm afraid you misunderstood my comment, nige: it is Thai culture in general (not the specific minority examples you mentioned) that encourages people to tolerate the worst aspects of human social behavior in favor of social cohesion; to wit: rampant corruption, incredible waste of resources, inept education, respect for officials who are clearly damaging the country, slavery, indentured servitude, and a familiar list of sins that, were it not for the commercial prowess of the Thai-Chinese, would keep the locals tilling paddies and seeking lottery numbers from dead fetuses. Do I think the minorities CHOOSE (sic) to live like they do? Of course not, but at whom is the finger pointed when we discuss their misery? Give that a bit of thought before you suggest surgery for others...
