Fear

I've been talking to a Thai friend in CM who is genuinely afraid since the BKK bomb.
"There's nothing to fear but fear itself," as the saying goes.
And I think Brits in particular have been used to the threat of terrorism for years.
One of my pals was on a bus heading into Birmingham when the infamous bombings happened.
Like many, he got out of the bus and ran to see what he could do.
I'm not suggesting that's a thing peculiar to Brits - some Brits would run away too.
Fear is an irrational thing - some people are scared of their shadows - and some normally strong-willed people are scared of unusual things.
When I was a kid, I was scared of leeks - cos I'd seen an episode of "Day of the Triffids."
My Mum thought was hilarious and would chase me around the house with leeks.
Bitch.
These days I've recovered from my leekophobia -
My Uncle would hide behind his couch when a snake appeared on TV.
I knew a woman that would convince herself she had every new fad disease going - AIDS, Mad Cow Disease - you name it - fear was her middle name.
What do I fear now? death? - no.
When I was out cold for a moment when I fell off my bike that took any fear of death I had away ( and I don't think I had much before ). It's just like a switch going off.
But a stroke? Yes - I fear that - and dementia.
But I don't fear walking down the street - and neither does my sister and her man who are going ahead with their plans to visit BKK next week.
In fear? a terrible way to live your life.

In fear? a terrible way to live your life. LUCY by: William Wordsworth (1770-1850) I. TRANGE fits of passion have I known: And I will dare to tell, But in the lover's ear alone, What once to me befell. When she I loved look'd every day Fresh as a rose in June, I to her cottage bent my way, Beneath an evening moon. Upon the moon I fix'd my eye, All over the wide lea; With quickening pace my horse drew nigh Those paths so dear to me. And now we reach'd the orchard-plot; And, as we climb'd the hill, The sinking moon to Lucy's cot Came near and nearer still. In one of those sweet dreams I slept, Kind Nature's gentlest boon! And all the while my eyes I kept On the descending moon. My horse moved on; hoof after hoof He raised, and never stopp'd: When down behind the cottage roof, At once, the bright moon dropp'd. What fond and wayward thoughts will slide Into a lover's head! 'O mercy!' to myself I cried, 'If Lucy should be dead!'

My mother , whenever I was travelling, asked me to phone, ring just three times, just to let me know. But why? Nothing, you can do. If I needed help I would ring, naturally, if I am dead, I am sure you will find out and still nothing you can do. Cynical young me ( have I changed)? She did get a call from a hospital; I was given little chance of surviving a motorcycle crash. My parents came, I did not know until later; I was in a coma. Then as a parent yourself you understand. My son's school bus is late; not unusual with Bangkok traffic. But the thought is there, always there! What fond and wayward thoughts will slide Into a lover's head! 'O mercy!' to myself I cried, 'If Lucy should be dead!'

Scared of leeks . Do they even have a name for that? leekaphobia I remember vividly the car bomb that went off on the 25th April 94 in down town JHB, I was sitting at my desk in down town JHB when it went off Thinking back guess never realised how close that country came to civil war during the 3 month period leading up to the elections, it wasn't the fear of terrorism that made me leave, but the crime after a couple of close calls brought things far to close to home for my liking, so in 99 I eventually bailed the country, not so much out fear for my myself but my Ex-wife and baby daughter.

Scared of leeks . Do they even have a name for that? Leekophobia - I was only five, and the Day of the Triffids was terrifying - "All plants move, but they don't usually tear themselves out of the ground and chase you." Gawd - I won't sleep now

Explanation.
I try to open the door; guess that is the teacher in me, or the pseudo philosopher as a TVer put it!
Nothing is new!
The Lucy poems came to mind.
Why?
Wordsworth was in his youth a supporter of the French revolution.
He went to France.
Loved a woman , a partner, they had a child.
The revolution turned to terror, Wordsworth ran, deserted his lover and their child. {Lucy}
He became a conservative, terror won!
But we know it did not, not in the longer span of time.
The sad loss of so many innocents, now and then!
For what?
Could give a lecture on this, but not on Mango!

When I was ten my parents left me with the next door neighbour who was an old fart whilst they went out to dinner. She fell asleep in the armchair and I watched this late night movie 'The Blob', that 1950's something scary alien thing that eats everything in its path. Anyway, I was so terrified, I put rolled up towels under every door and stuck packaging tape around all the bedroom windows in case 'The Blob' was around. Mum and dad couldn't get into the house . Got in big trouble because I put super glue in the keyholes. Never watched a horror flick since then, the memory of 'The Blob' is still startling even though it was a crap movie.

We usually live in fear of such trivial life items - more often than not, manufactured for ourselves.
Why be suckered in?

I care, care for not just my own family, care!
Sad when lives are lost for no reason.
Care, because I should care and you should know I am no sucker.
I try, have always tried to live my life (whatever that is) to not harm others, to be tolerant and when boundaries are broken, not to seek revenge.
No angel, sure; but always ready to admit my failings and apologise.
Blowing up innocents is not on my agenda; neither yours I trust.
Thinking, considering, contemplating is.
