So I was in a shop earlier today, and 2 customers are holding the dolls pictured below, and the girl who works in the shop says they have been banned very recently, and after these have sold out, we won't be selling them anymore due to them being called a racist doll. I remember when I was young, they were a common kids toy. They faded off the scene and I haven't seen them for a good 30 years anywhere until this shop today. Now in the same shop, there was white skinned kids dolls, these aren't considered racist. There was little fat Chinese Buddha toy statues, also not considered racist. So what's the big deal with these?

THe Dutch used to have 'zwarte piet' (Black Peter) as servants to Sinterklaas. Totally wrong of course, even the UN has spoken against. "The figure of Zwarte Piet is considered by some to be racist. As such, the traditions surrounding the holiday of Sinterklaas have been the subject of numerous editorials, debates, documentaries, protests and even violent clashes at festivals." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinterklaas

I was most distressed out of concern for Golliwogs, when they lost their jobs on the jam jars, I mean where was the Golliwog Union when they were made redundant

Not really surprised gollywog dools are deemed racist. You're still lucky you didn't get 'near' global condemnation from UN, HRW and who have you. I was restricted to a white "GI Joe" doll. Collectable these days I've heard. Probably worth a few bucks.

It's another example of "I don't like it, therefore it must be banned."
I've seen plenty of offensive parodies of Scots over the years - and didn't think any should have been banned.
Then some would say that it's not racist - but it can edge towards sectarian - and sectarianism is as bad as racism.
Just ask the Tutsis.

Yes, well I did contemplate using the word Tribalism - but as soon as you use it, most Westerners get a picture of half-naked African's running about doing each other in with spears. To bring it closer to home it has to be sectarianism - which sees people from the same racial background turning on each other.

There was little fat Chinese Buddha toy statues, also not considered racist. This really is a bête noire of mine. The Lord Buddha was never fat. The fat figure that many people ignorantly confuse with him is in fact that of an eccentric Chinese monk named Budai from the early 10th century CE.

Of course not, that would be promoting water pollution! We now have 'zwarte piet' in all colours of the rain bow and added both black and white for good measure.
