It sounded angry, it sounded as angry as any telephone ring could sound. Peter knew what was coming and wondered about the wisdom of answering the Skype call.
"Hello."
"Hello, Dad? can you hear me?"
"Yes, Catherine, I can hear you."
"You were supposed to call me back and confirm you would be here for Christmas."
"Ah, yes - sorry. I won't be able to make it." And at that a new sound of anger erupted, the sound of angry silence - made worse by every passing second.
"What do you mean you won't be able to make it?"
"Well, I've looked at the price of the flights, and they are out of reach for me at that time of year."
"You said the same thing in February, and June, and September. What time of year will the prices be in reach?"
"To be honest with you, I can't afford to come back. Even if I could scratch together the flight money, I can't afford the gifts and socializing."
"But you could afford to build a house for that bitch?"
"I'm sorry, I'm really sorry."
"Fork your sorry, Dad - what about the kids?"

^^ If you ever see me get in that position - load gun, aim, pull trigger just at the nape of my neck.
What a state to get yourself into - and yet, there's plenty that do it.
And delude themselves that it's okay.
Then wonder why their families reject them when they go crawling back.

Nothing to stop her going. She seems grown up in age anyway. The guy has his life to live. He gave her hers for her to live. She does not own him.

Whats to stop her getting on a plane? Exactly right. Honestly most of the older retirees are on limited funds anyway ie pensions so flying home or out for a holiday isn't cheap for them. Plus, old dad deserves to enjoy his retired life imo however he chooses. He's done a life's work, raised his family, up to him .

A dear friend from New York is kind of in this position. At 64 he's constantly having to go contracting (physical work, welder/pipe fitter) around the World for a year at a time whilst the Thai wife who clearly doesn't love him orders the new 4.5million Baht house on top of the one he's already built in the village, demands the new SUV, has two kids, one's 5 the other 6 months. Endless cost and far too late in life. Got nothing in the US. Very precarious circumstances, knows it, but still refuses to believe it.
Thankfully he's going to have a good pension when he finally draws it, so long as the US economy holds together.
He's a very caring person, genuine and faithful. Had a tough life too.
Anyway, to summarize, it all started with . . . first time in Thailand on R&R . . . first bar . . . first girl . . . some people (victims) just aren't suited to the place.

Most couples I know in the UK couldn't afford to fly to Thailand with two children at Christmas time. As you know - young children = maximum expense.

I remember when it was just me flying to Bkk, under a grand on a good week. Those days are gone with a family. I miss those days.

So you expect them to keep leaching off their dad. They do have contraception these days so entirely her choice. If she cannot afford the kids she should not have had them. Not blame her father.

That's what the DSS is for. Of course the British taxpayer can afford them.

It is Blether's fiction and as the author he can create any character he chooses.
Art, might mirror life, but it is not life.
Any fictional character is a deception.
Ian McEwan addressd this in his novel "Atonement,".
Bragging rights, I studied with Malcolm Bradbury too, a few years after McEwan!
If you have time read McEwan's masterpiece (yes the film is good but misses the essential point).
<Bunny boiler> will be at me, but the source of the idea behind the novel, "Atonement" is Emily Bronte," Wuthering Heights"
Sorry not Mango stuff, I'll shut up.

On topic, when my second son, the Thai one is third, visited me from England, said novel was on the bookshelf. He could not put it down. Great discussions after. Never met McEwan, but all the professors and lecturers were nearly the same, three years after he left UEA!
Oh I am sorry, I said I would shut up!
