Morning glory is that climbing plant with purple flowers, is it not? Not an ingredient here, don't recall having tried it. Which part of the plant do they use?

A question I asked too - I noticed that they chopped off the bottom of the stems as they said export quality morning glory was dipped in some type of preservative that got sucked up the first wee bit of the stem - I think that is to prevent unsightly browning. From there, it was the entire, lengthy stem - I noticed the leaves being discarded too. It's a good addition to the meal as it has a good body and texture. The pork you see in that picture was deep fried, to me for ages. It wouldn't win any health awards as the pork fat was the prize - and delicious. Every country has it's heart-attack-on-a-plate national favourite - that seems to be the Thais I'll see if I can get a couple of recipes Trix -

Trix - another dish that went down a storm but I didn't photo was Thai omelette with Japanese Mushroom. Great body to it - and the couple of westerners that were there thought it was amazing.

Even in my little area of suburban Bangkok, where wild plants still grow, the locals collect all sorts of leaves and stems, morning glory being one. Also the front gardens or waste land nearby , all essential Thai herbs are grown and shared. People just go and pick a few leaves. Oi my chef, has a little plot of strange things and picks them before cooking. A fast disappearing art I suspect.

Those are Chinese mushrooms the Japanese stole from the Chinese same as they want those islands. Enoki, great in soups. They are also called 'See you tomorrow' mushies. can't be digested properly and they come out the other end the same as how you ate them.....report back your findings tomorrow bleth They look like big long W-O-R-M-S in your stools.

Thats one of the things I love about living in the moo baan I do, the plants etc outside the houses, feel free to help yourself, no one will say anything. I once "caught" a woman helping herself to the plants outside our house, she gave me one of those smiles, mai pen rai, chern krap (dont worry, help yourself) was my reply. They do it all the time, its just the way it is.

Then there is this: TIT www.nationmultimedia.com/breakingnews/73-year-old-woman-gets-3-years-4-months-for-electr-30178840.html A 73-year-old woman was Tuesday sentenced to three years and four months in jail for putting up a live wire fencing around her house to protect her kratom, causing a thief to be killed early last year. The court ruled that Thongdee Jaemsri was guilty in premeditated murder and having 41 kilograms of kratom (Mitragyna speciosa. Korth) in possession with intent to sell.
The court ruled that Thongdee used too excessive measure to protect her house by putting up 220 volt live wire fencing around her house in Bangkok's Bang Kapi district. The fence killed Maropi Lungmae in February 2010. The court said the electricity would take three to six minutes to kill a man and the power breaker, which the electric fence was wired to, should warn the woman to cut the power supply but she did nothing until the man was electrocuted.
The court believed that the man sneaked into the house to steal the kratom the woman grew inside her house compound and his leg accidentally touched the wire when he was leaving.

Morning Glory as it is called here is Ipomoea aquatica AKA water spinach, river spinach. Its a classic Thai side or main dish and stir-fried with chili pepper, garlic, ginger, dried shrimp paste.
Love it!

Love it! Its called Ong Choi in cantonese and is done in a wok with garlic, fresh chili and stinky tofu .
