The veteran journalist and Wiradjuri man, Stan Grant, has told a Sydney audience that racism is “at the heart of the Australian dream,” as he delivered a sobering speech about the impact of colonisation and discrimination on Indigenous people and their ancestors. It has provoked a powerful reaction from Australians, going viral on Facebook with 850,000 views and 28,000 shares, and had been watched more than 50,000 times on YouTube by Sunday night. I didn't think this would make it to the other forum too close to home. “My people die young in this country. We die 10 years younger than the average Australian, and we are far from free. We are fewer than 3% of the Australian population and yet we are 25% – one quarter – of those Australians locked up in our prisons. And if you’re a juvenile it is worse, it is 50%. An Indigenous child is more likely to be locked up in prison than they are to finish high school.” www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2016/jan/24/stan-grants-speech-on-racism-and-the-australian-dream-goes-viralMight be a different story if the Aussies elected an Aboriginal PM.

Not any more racist than the good ole USA - anyway, there's always two sides to the story, and one side that has to be pointed out is this: DO you want the shocking truth? There's a place in the world where dreadful violence is regularly inflicted upon women - rape, terrifying assault and murder. In this place, women of a certain ethnic group are 80 times more likely to be hospitalised for assault and injury. Many of the assaults are perpetrated by the women's husbands or partners and include being raped with wooden or metal objects, or being murdered by being repeatedly punched and struck with a saucepan, stones, a wheel rim and a wheel brace. Or there was the case of the man who used a hose to whip his 32-year-old wife, stomping on her abdomen and dragging her naked body over rough ground, before raping her, and then bashing her with either a stick or metal pole, causing severe internal injuries, before finishing her off with a rock. In this place, up to 20 people live in some houses and children are stressed out and neglected. In remote areas, up to 65 per cent of children attend school for fewer than three days a week and up to 60 per cent of them fail the national early developmental index which measures a child's ability to cope with starting school. Apart from the outrageously high rates of violence, unemployment is rife, and thousands of people are battling alcohol and gambling abuse. Australians who were shocked over the last few months by violent attacks on women in India should be alarmed by this. This place is in our backyard. It is one-third the size of India, and has .0002 of India's population. It is Central Australia, and in particular the Northern Territory. "There is a tri-state area in the middle of Australia which is a Bermuda triangle for domestic violence against Aboriginal women," said South Australian university lecturer and anthropologist, Professor Peter Sutton. "People don't want to know, but how about women being raped by a burning fire stick or by a star picket? "After the incidents in India I had a stream of emails from people wanting something done about it, but there's no petitions hitting my in-tray about what goes on in Central Australia and has done so for a very long time." "The society where this is going on is very different from the middle-class Aboriginal people that many people know. "These are hair trigger communities where people fly into a rage in a second. "People are under the influence of alcohol and there are beatings and stabbings. "Resorting to physical violence is the norm." Man mend thyself - community mend thyself - the Aboriginal community has to make a stand against these scourges, and at the very least take advantage of the education system to give themselves a chance of themselves out of poverty.

^^ Obama is barely white - brought up by his white mother and family, while his Dad was absent. What did Jesse Jackson say? The trouble with Obama is that he's not black enough? www.politico.com/story/2007/09/jackson-slams-obama-for-acting-white-005902 As much as I like Obama, he's been a disappointment as far as race issues are concerned. And he's been a poor advocate for Africa - it could be argued that George W Bush was better in both areas.

Load of rubbish ... Got the PC set all fired up, rest of us just yawned. Adam Goodes was awarded the Australian of the year in 2014 from memory. Hi is part aboriginal and was an AFL player, formed a charity ... that's all ... but the PC crowd named him the Man Person of Australia. I'm starting with him because Grant's speech started with him. There were many who booed him openly on the Football field. They would boo him in the same style as when you cheered your favorite player. So, when it came to a head, the Australian Public were told that they were 'Racist' because they where booing an Aboriginal Player. Bullshite Adam Goodes wasn't being booed because he was an Aboriginal ... he was being booed because he was a Dick. His 'on-Field' antics didn't endear him to the crowd. Below is just one example. After kicking a goal he raced towards the opposition supporters and did his war dance. Now, ignore the sound track, because it's negatively provocative, but I was up to page 4 of Google trying to get a clip of it and it was the only one I could find. Adam Goodes wasn't being booed because he was an Aboriginal ... he was being booed because he was a Dick. There are heaps of part Aboriginal players in the game and, as a sporting nation, we embrace them. If they are a Dick, we call them a Dick, if they are a great player, we're proud. I couldn't be more proud of Johnathan Thurston, co-captain of the Australian Rugby League Team and often cited as the best player in the World in his game. So, that's the Adam Goodes, opening remark dealt with. The next bit ... Lets look at that 'fact'. Is it getting better? Source:- www.aihw.gov.au/indigenous-observatory-life-expectancy/ I'm not here to try and change your mind, just trying to offer an alternative view. If you are a Dick, you are a Dick, you might be an Aboriginal Dick ... Mate, you're still a dick. If you continue to smoke and drink to excess, then you will have a much higher chance of passing early, Aboriginal or not. If you live remotely, as many Aboriginal Communities are, thus remotely from Health Services, then that has implications also. Heck, we have Sheep Stations the size of England! I don't care if you are Black, White or Pink ... if you are a good person, you are welcome at my table any day. Some of my all time sporting Heroes are part Aboriginal. Geeze, I wish I could play as good as him. And, if you know Australian Culture, that is a high regard. Are Australians Racists? Sure, some are, some are not, but the majority of us just go with the flow. Me?, I just go with the flow ...

I think they would both be black enough for you. My point is Australia is more racist than America. Actually my point is that the story will not run on the other forum because it is not anti American or anti Thai enough for the news forum.

Can you imagine Australia with 20%? See what I'm saying. Australia has no blacks to speak of. Think of what would happen if they actually had a black population of any size. They come across as all PC and tolerant only because they actually have a black population hardly ever seen because there are so few of them.

I am not going to attack the op, for fear of being labeled one of those racists he talks about, but I cannot help wondering why the topic was even started.
Of course there are racists in Australia, hell, I know some of them and they are both embarrassing and annoying. I often think the world would be better off without them and then everyone would get on and concentrate on existing and surviving.
Don't see the point in comparing the racism level in Australia to any other country either. No matter how severe it is it is too much.
This quote p**sed me off -
"There is a tri-state area in the middle of Australia which is a Bermuda triangle for domestic violence against Aboriginal women," said South Australian university lecturer and anthropologist, Professor Peter Sutton."
This Professor is one of those educated idiots who makes lots of money by merely stating the obvious. The OP seems to be about how racist Australia is but anecdotes about the violence happening in Aboriginal communities to me is off topic, because most of these offences are usually carried out by their own people. I think this violence is partly due their exposure to alcohol and it is not surprising that there are "dry" communities out there that try to avoid this violence.
Stan Grant made a poor choice when he used Adam Goodes as an example of an Aboriginal man being abused and insulted. Goodes was and probably still is a <theduck> with a big chip on his shoulder and people like that in Australia will always cop it, regardless of their skin color or nationality. Anthony Mundine is another example of a dickhead who gives his race a bad name.
cmk says his "point is Australia is more racist than America."................So what ? Doubt if his observations and opinions will make it into the text books and I for one don't feel bad about it as I don't regard myself as "one of them".

My grandfather was a racist. He was Irish. He really didn't like the British (also or Greeks). But he married a British girl because she had big breasts (his words). Although having said that he was the only one who didn't mind when I brought a black girl home from college. He said he understood because she had big breasts. She really did have big breasts and perky too (not a combination you see a lot and not much after 25 years of age.
