I appreciate all the advise, thank you No offence, why would you choose Samititvej? The Thais I know choose the hospital based on the ailment. Eg cancer head for Chula, hip or knee replacement head for X, need Y doing head for Z.

Been there in the past for what?
Choose the hospital that treats your ailment.
If by the time you come back and you aint yet cured, what one week of anti bios by now, you have ploblems.
Dont mess around, get it sorted.

I went to Rayong Bangkok yesterday to have an eye problem taken care of. I went to the information desk first and told them I wanted to go the eye center. They told me to have a seat which I did and in 10 minutes they presented me with an appointment card for the eye center where I went next. The nurse checked my eyes and blood pressure and filled in my chart and told me the doctor would see me in 20 minutes. 20 minutes - I was called and a doctor who spoke English put my chin in an eye looking exam thing and closely looked at my eye and told me no infection just a broken blood vessel (bp meds) and gave me a prescription. The nurse walked me to the cashier and gave the bill to the pharmacy/cashier who called my name in English and advised me to put the drops in my eyes 4 times a day for a week and call them if the redness was not gone in a week. Bill was 800 baht presented to me after all services performed. When I went there for a heart attack they asked my wife if she would guarantee payment before they started clot busting drugs (200,000 bht). They wanted some money after I had been in ICU for 3 days. I've lived here for 10 years never had a problem with hospitals. Not meaning to be a twat, bit of a contradiction there. Asked for a guarantee first, before giving medication, by the time the guarantee had been approved you could have been dead. I walked out a hospital after seeing a doctor, prescription given etc etc, some Hello Kitty type at the cashiers desk was playing eff the farang around (not doubt hadnt been laid last night), I told her to stick it up her ass. Next day the Insurance lady went CRAZY, came to the house picked me up and went to same hospital. The usual BS crap, kor tawt ka, new lady she dont know, NOT a effin word of apology. I was on the bed hooked up to all sorts of tubes and stuff the doctor asked wife will you guarantee - wife said yes - took 5 seconds. There is a 4 hour window for clot busting drugs and the cost of the treatment for those drugs was 200,000 to include ICU. I didn't mean the doctor asked the wife for cash. He asked her if she would be responsible for the bill (I guess if I died).

I've gained a greater understanding into life inside Thailand from this thread which is great and I appreciate it! I've always known its anything but straightforward.
We actually have a pharmacist amongst us and it would be great if he offered his opinion every once in a while:).

Dont worry Dr Tony will be along shortly to dispense his, drink a litre of jamesons a day keep the doctor away prognosis.
Funnily enough its not so far fetched as you may think, why do you think so many of these manual labour types knock back lao kao for a decent nights sleep, its cheaper than medication.
The eyes always gives them away, just one look and you know they have serious liver problems.

I was speaking to a friend that lives in Chiang Mai about health insurance. His bills 12,500 a month using Bupa. He also wasn't certain of all the black and white down to a tee, But he did know it didn't include motorbikes etc.
How does his monthly bill compare to others living fulltime in Thailand?

Sounds expensive.
Not mentioned, how old is he, and how much cover does he have, he may well be over insured.
Is it restricted to Thailand only, or worldwide?

I feel a lot better however I'll still be going into the hospital in BKK to have more blood tests, just to check what's going on with the kidneys and liver.
