Until 2 years ago my gf convinced me to go there.
Now I think I am going to retire in sin city.
Mind you hoz would just be an icing on the cake. Hard to believe, but I am yet to visit the establishment. What brings me back is the food. Especially that Russian buffet. This is the only buffet where they serve stew like beef and pork, plus it has great mashed potatoes..... and Russian salad.... plus choice of unlimited steaks. All that for 299. If anyone can recommend something similar in Bangkok please let me know.
Pattaya FTW

Many years ago I hadn't even thought of Pattaya. Then one day in 1984 I decided to visit. Off the plane 7am Checked into hotel about 11am Went out to get something to eat at about noon. Entered the Tahitian Queen about 1230 (like walking into a Salvador Dali painting at the time)
Life changer, game changer, whatever......but the TQ will always hold fond memories for me.
One day I'll try the Pattaya food when visiting.

Pattaya now is by far the second biggest city in Thailand. It has many advantages over Bangkok and I expect Bangkok companies to move there in the future. It's still a wild west town but hey nowhere's perfect. Traffic jams are few and far between. Beach Road and Walking Street are just a small section of Pattaya but that's where everyone seems to go. Spend a week or two there and explore the Darkside.

I think ATF makes a good point, Pattaya is vey much split. The Darkside, I guess is what is up on the lake is a totally different world. Some real,y good places to eat, a golf course and of course a bit of peace.

I agree Soi Khao Noi is full of the crowd wearing Chang wife beaters and so is Nern Plub Wan. You have to go up Soi Siam Country Club to the lake lots of bars and restaurants and resorts there but the "entertainment" is not in your face like downtown Pattaya and you don't get hassled for lady drinks and no one calls you handsome man.
There's a very large expat community there. Mostly quality expats and it's only around 20 mins from downtown Pattaya. If you're staying downtown take a drive or rent a scooter and have a look around. No blue Baht buses either.

I like Med Garden Resort, it's nothing fancy, but it's small, intimate and serves good food. There are plenty of eating places around the lake, and I agree with ATF, it really is a different world from downtown Pattaya

Where is the quality place to stay up by the lake then? I'd say check out the Mediterranean Garden Resort 1k Baht a night, swimming pool, trampoline for the kids and class food. The English breakfast is better than you're going to get almost anywhere and they do black pudding too but it's not on the menu you need to ask. Toady will provide a second opinion if you ask him nicely.

I thought I was at Glastonbury, it was like some sort of new age travellers gathering of the tribes. Ban nork sur mer, some would say its the 'real Thailand' Not for me, you want to see whats living on some of those moo baans, hillbillies newly arrived from upcountry complete with fighting cocks to 'take care' of the house while Little Lek and her beau go back to farangistan. When will these idiots realise a 'Tuna wont buy you either class, status or acceptance, it just makes you look like a cock, your girlfriends tatts are a dead giveaway, never mind. Love the entrepeneurail spirit, set up some dog breeding farm two house down front yard full of barking mutts. The 'brother' down from hillbilly land sets up a motorcycle repair shop in the front yard. No wonder many turn to Chang to ease away the pain, living the dream.

I grew up on a council estate in a small fishing village. No plans to move back to one in Thailand EVER. Same the world over really....mind you I am soon to experience condo living in Bangkok....that will be interesting....looking forward to being five minutes away from the Crossbar! Don't tell 'er indoors I said that....hehehehe
