Funny thing about visa regulations around the world but I have found some of the worse places I could possibly want to live in had the slackest visa rules. Funny about that.
Also realised over the years that some of the foreigners who complained the most about Thai visa rules were the ones I would not want living in my country either. The respectable people with their heads screwed on don't seem to complain that much.
And as someone else already mentioned, it's not right to compare anything about Thailand to Mexico, apples and oranges.
(and I dearly hope this forum does not become one where Thai bashers throw that stupid term "Thainess" around in almost every thread)

In my case I'm pointing out that Brits, many outstanding men among them, are being put through an emotional wringer due to the exchange. rate. One pal of mine got a shock when he was told his retirement visa would be calculated on 42 baht, at a time the bank rate was 44 +. That 2 baht took him below the income level. I don't think some people realize the severe stress many Brits are under. That particular guy woulc have the life of Riley here.

So then Thainess is taboo. A person raised and educated in Thailand should hide their Thai character? if you like Thais I'd think Thainess used in a conversation would be a good thing.
I can remember way back to the Ajarn yellew-page forum how guys would jump at the chance to defend Thailand and Thais, as if they were one of them, part of whatever's goin down, gone native, don't tread on us, together we stand! I can remember guys replying, "Go tell your wife you just found out your financial future just tanked. Go ask your neighbors to borrow what you need to pay this month's rent." They'd drop you like a dirty diaper. I remember when Phil wrote: "I've been here over 20 years and I can count my Thai friends on 1/5 of one hand."
As far as I'm concerned Mexicans are good people but I'd never want to be one. Thing I respect is that they know they're f...ed up. They are not offended being called Third World cause "that's what we are."
To me Thailand without the female population (the backbone of the nation) would sink into the sea. I hated the boys, the TecSchool Honda Wave with gold screws types. Pieces of cream-colored runny dog turds.

Have only ever heard that stupid term in a negative way, to put people down, am yet to see it used positively. Usually favoured by nasty prix over at TVF who specialise in bagging Thais from the safety of their local internet cafe. Not sure how it will be used here, but have a good idea. And it looks like if I say anything about Thai bashing I am automatically a Thai apologist. Thought I left that idiotic train of thought behind me over at the other place.

Thought I left that idiotic train of thought behind me over at the other place. ...life is rough when you're a caboose, no doubt...Thais are entitled to their Thainess. What they (the people who think this way) are not entitled to is the assumption that non-Thais should agree with their every twitch without comment. Cultural idiosyncrasies can be interesting, fun, endearing, etc...cultural idiots, however, are a waste of time...

Nobody should be expected to grin and nod and accept anything, we are human after all. What I don't understand is why people move to another country which has absolutely nothing in common with their own, and spend the rest of their miserable lives running it down. I feel sorry for them (in a way) would be like being locked in to an unhappy marriage.

To be honest there is only one way to look upon this scenario. It is in fact a foregone indisputable fact!!!!

sp, when we lived in the condo in CM city for 5 years there was an Italian guy who owned a condo in our building, used to spend about 3-4 months of the year there. He used to complain constantly about everything and anything the whole time he was in CM, I used to laugh at the pithy things he moaned about. One day he was cracking up because the management of the condo building told him to stop bringing "young men" back to his room every night. Funny as hell !

Oh, so then he was queer. That's a funny story. Maybe his queerness was part of his Italianess. You're busted!

I was a digital nomad in Puebla for six months, after studying Spanish in my free time for two years.
Fun at first, but personally I found Mexican people/culture in general were not as interesting as Thai people/culture. Of course there are plenty of exceptions.
After six months I pulled up anchor and moved back to Thailand after being away for about six years.
But yeah, the Mexican visa system is much more reasonable.

* Note to self - Don't post funny stories about whining, queer Italians. May upset other posters who are either - a. whiners b. queer c. Italian or just nasty, sarky prix !
