Funny thing about visa regulations around the world but I have found some of the worse places I could possibly want to live in had the slackest visa rules. Funny about that. Also realised over the years that some of the foreigners who complained the most about Thai visa rules were the ones I would not want living in my country either. The respectable people with their heads screwed on don't seem to complain that much. And as someone else already mentioned, it's not right to compare anything about Thailand to Mexico, apples and oranges. (and I dearly hope this forum does not become one where Thai bashers throw that stupid term "Thainess" around in almost every thread) We're not bashing Thailand. In my case I'm pointing out that Brits, many outstanding men among them, are being put through an emotional wringer due to the exchange. rate. One pal of mine got a shock when he was told his retirement visa would be calculated on 42 baht, at a time the bank rate was 44 +. That 2 baht took him below the income level. I don't think some people realize the severe stress many Brits are under. That particular guy woulc have the life of Riley here. As oppossed to being ill advised or ill informed. Exchange rates is nothing but a red herring, just deposit 800k baht in a Thai bank account and you are good to go. I find it hard to believe that someone or anyone can reach age 50 and not have 800k baht to deposit. Go on cry me a effin river, ripped off by his mrs, ill advised by some fly by night finacial type, another QROPS type? The first question I ask anyone thinking about retiring here is, can you afford to retire in your home country. If the answer is no, then Thailand may not be for you. I have said it before and will repeat, Thailand, was not, is not, and never will be a cheap place to retire to. I beg to differ, about the life of Riley, he would probably be on some Gringo forum complaining about the heat, the exchange rate, the interest rate, the Brit Gov't ripping him off, his mrs, his wifes family, the food too spicy, why cant you get a decent cuppa tea, why does the local beer taste like southern shandy, where can he buy Heinz beans, etc etc. Go join the rest of the bitter and twisted Thailand done me wrong types, now posting from such paradise loacations as Cambo Or Flippersville. I hear Eritrea, Somalia and Ethiopa are nice this time of year.

" I find it hard to believe that someone or anyone can reach age 50 and not have 800k baht to deposit." I don't have it. Does that make me a , a ne'er-do-well, inferior, a peon, low caste, persona non grata? Please tell me, what am I? You must have a name for my ilk.

I figure a poor can have all the experiences as a rich man has .. but in less comfort. And if you're health is good, and if you've been weaned property to where you're not craving the ultimate comfort -the womb- and if you're not one who watches a lot of milky tit squirt it on my arse porn, you'll handle the mild discomfort just fine.
As for mentioning all those awful places to live, like Niger and such, is somewhat retarded to anyone with a double digit IQ. Taking arguments to extreme cases of comparison is done by those of us who have the idea his audience is ignorant. It's Trumpty.
Climate is number one for me, no deserts, no rain forests, no snow. I'm on the edge of the Tropics, aka the Mediterranean Climate. I like that.

A man without means ultimately ends up leeching from his family and friends or the government handouts, failing that homeless. If you're getting old without a pot to p**s in or a feather to fly with, no job, no income, no health insurance, no pension plan, no savings, no nothing you end up being a burden. Not directed at anyone here. I knew one such person living in Thailand, his take was that he had many 'enjoyable experiences' and that was worth not planning for his advancing years. Certainly not a 'boring' life, after all, people who work and plan are just minions missing out on something. I call it self indulgent carelessness, what would he tell the grandkids back home? The tale of grandpa being picked up by three Thai prostitutes? His time in immi jail? Deportation? His countless experiences of receiving blow jobs or sex from women whose faces or names he couldn't remember? The list goes on and on. The universe owes you nothing, it was here first. If you mess up nobody can turn back the oedometer so you can have a rerun of life.

I hear Eritrea, Somalia and Ethiopa are nice this time of year. I will judge a country based on how it treats me. Thailand treats me ok, but I often wonder if the reason for this is because I have a wife who always watches my back and fights for simple trivial things like opening a bank account for marriage extension. In most places when you are married, you should be allowed to work, open your own business..... you know.... things normal people do to support a family. Not in Thailand unless you go through ridiculous hoops as a foreigner. I think someone's desire to live in Cambodia or Philippines (never been to either) has nothing to do with money in the bank. If I wasn't married, I would certainly give it a shot. If JD feels he is treated better in Mexico than Thailand I have no reason to doubt it. But criminals thrive here. Someone made a great comment on "another forum" about some old fart kicking a doctor in the head for no reason. He got a suspended sentence where he has to report to the police 4 times a year. Basically the same sentence every single foreigner gets in Thailand.

^ Interesting points made bud, and I agree with what you said about treating a country how it treats me. But what's good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander so there will always be some who are happier in say Mexico than Thailand and vice-versa. In my case I am happier in Thailand than Australia but would never condemn anyone for not feeling the same way. With the income I receive I live a better lifestyle here as well. If I moved the family to Australia we would be counting our pennies, the prices over there are ridiculous at times.

I'm not critical of anyone who has decided to make Thailand their home.
I am critical of those weasels who pressure friends to lend them money. I am critical of those, as shado mentioned, who are so feckless their problems land at the door of others. It appalls me.
I'm critical of those that could have helped themselves but left it unto others. These aren't men - these are man-child's. Brit's are the worst for it, way too many believe the British government is their mother.
Some believe they are entitled to free flights, free medical care, free legal representation, and visas on demand for the skank they met last night. The list goes on.
Be skint. Live in the 1500 baht a month 1960's semi-derelict concrete block. Eat som Tam four times a day and live on 10,000 baht a month. Go ahead- be happy. But make sure you can bail yourself out if things go tits up.

I mean I'm not looking to get beheaded by some narco gang but I've lived in up-scale neighborhoods, grand piano and chandeliers (not my own home mind you) and I was bored to tears. Too much safety and tranquility doesn't do it for me. Plus as a musician going downtown bumpin around is part of the gig. Never been robbed but for petty sh.t. Thieves more than assaults, cars, motorcycles. Nowadays I think the average per day stolen is a little over a hundred.
In Mexo as in Thailand, you usually get the benefit of the doubt, but when you're in trouble, you're really in trouble.

The last sentence, I had a friend who was in Mexico a few years ago on a holiday and he had a gun put to his head in a bar over a woman. He says they were just talking, lesson learnt he said, 'Don't try to fukk with another man's vehicle.' Scared the bejusus out of him.

Similar to Thailand, Mex on Mex crime is in a different league.
The difference I've noted, and been told, in Guadalajara, is that the few foreigners here are not targeted. No one is immune from opportunist crime, but in the Thai tourist areas opportunist crime has been elevated to an art level.
Puerto Vallarta is tame, but there are plenty of stories of guys falling in love with the wrong one and being taken to the cleaners. That's what happens world over if you play the hooker game.
In saying that - I've also been told that the police here are a law unto themselves. Minor infractions grow expensive horns.

I figure I have two features going for me; I'm old, I speak Mexican Spanish well. I never even talk to cops but when I do it's casual and calm. And I'm a library of Mexican jokes. IOW, not the guy they're looking for. Never seen a gun pulled nor a knife. Every time I see a girl, like at a gig or an eatery, I assume she already has a man. It's my rule to live by.
What's important to anyone living in any foreign country, IMO, is to get connected as soon as possible. Mix with people, wave to people you've met when you see them on the street. Be talkative, be sociable, help out, don't be stingy. Works for me.

As for the paradise locations I mentioned, go frequent other forums and read the posts from the now departed from Thailand, the venom, hatred and jealousy is almost dripping from the screen. The ones I know who relocated all had one thing in common, no money. I dont know of anyone who works in Thailand who is thinking of relocating. The only ones I know who relocated, moved onto bigger and better things as part of their career programme with large MNCs, they are now in places such as Hong Kong, Singapore or Australia. A few months back I was offered Canada, but turned it down.
