The Campbell betrayal was on a different level. Scandalous. Absolutely! Massacre some fellow clansmen no problem, but tricking the English to help, now that's immoral You have your oar in the wrong water, Rubl

My Scottish family are Wishart, Gillespie . But old feuds are not my territory. As a romantic, in more ways than one, my three sons all have a family middle name, first is Haxton, from his Scottish mother, second Gillespie, from my mother, third I will keep secret, but it is his mother's Thai family name and the one he uses. I hope there are no Thai feuds from hundreds of years ago that I do not know about.

Women and children alike. The breach of the code of highland hospitality - to have taken shelter in McDonald homes, to have been fed and watered, and bedded down - And to rise from their beds to slaughter their hosts - Sickening and appalling. And yes, Rubl - I and many Scots consider that to be a worse act of betrayal than that of Wallace. And I had high profile ancestors that fought with Wallace - who I'm pretty sure would agree what happened to the McDonald's was worse. It was nearly as bad as the actions of the Dutch Nazi collaborators. Just nearly - cos what they did was an embarrassment to the entire human race.

A family name? This is feudal, it has no place today. Tribal grudges. Can rake up any, any where. Get over it. Learn the history, yes, but be impartial.

As all know no 'real' Scot would collaborate with English. "On 3 August 1305 Wallace was captured in Robroyston, north of Glasgow. He was taken by Sir John Menteith, the uncle of Sir John Stewart who had fallen at the Battle of Falkirk. Menteith had been made sheriff of Dumbarton by Edward. From Dumbarton Castle the captive Wallace was taken south to Carlisle then paraded, bound hand and foot, to London." Next we'll put things in historical perspective which tends to explain why such things could happen in times when ideas, concept differed a bit from what we now accept as 'normal'.

Rubl and Bleth, it is a futile argument.
I gave my Scottish ancestry, have researched it out of interest. All strongly protestant. Am I? Did I inherit that? Or did I inherit more than that? I hope so.
It is interesting agreed, but is not of more than passing interest to me. I may be the ancestor of a despicable child murderer, so what. That is not me. I do not believe in the old testament , of the sins of the fathers. History is interesting and lessons can be learnt, but they are to contemplate not to perpetuate.

We are quite aware of our tendency to stabbed each other in the back. A feeling that Ann Frank is familiar with. Just sayin'
