Well not all are willing to reward as you do.
People also need family time...or at least the children do.

But I note his partner had to consfiscate all his devices and send him to bed,,,,,and that was by his own admission

Don't know about y'all but I'm tired of Me-again Kelly.  She is a blatant opportunist but that's like saying water is wet when it comes to these talking heads on TV.

As a teacher in England some days I would be working up until ten at night. The work and the salary were not connected in my thinking. I had to do what needed to be done. If I needed to phone someone (the days before e mails) to get some information, I did. Likewise I received calls at home, work related.
In Thailand, certainly e mails coming in and out at all hours. Being up to date with changes in plans for the next day vital. No good turning up in the morning to discover that arrangements had changed and all those plans were useless, as I was to be teaching a different class.
Agreed, this French ruling is crazy.
Addition:
I was a float teacher, most often covering for the class teacher's preparation time. A luxury I might add I never had in England. If a teacher called in sick , then those arrangements changed. The sick teacher, if still conscious, would e mail me and give an update as to where the class were at and the relevant lesson plans. All lesson plans had to be in place a week in advance and modified daily.
If you are professional, whether a lowly worker or higher up; the advantages of e mail updates out weigh the dis advantages.

By the way, the one thing that drove me wild with new employees was them showing up, declaring they were hungry, then going out to buy breakfast.

This was a carry over from the unionised places where and eight hours day would consist of a morning break, lunch, and afternoon tea.

And the phone went unanswered. The deliveries piled up outside. The customers went nuts as they were kept waiting for their orders.

So what did the cunning Blether do? I gave an incoming calls only phone to these employees, and told the customers to call them direct.

So what happened? The employees got fed up with chasing their tails, got fed up with screaming customers, and did exactly what I wanted them to do.

The night before, or first thing in the morning -

"Is that Mrs Smith? You're the third delivery/fitting today. You won't see me until 11.00 a.m. at the earliest - so if you want to take the dog for a walk or pop down the shops, go ahead. I'll see you soon."

The customers love it. As a customer, so would you.
