Viva la France! "New French Law Bars Work Email After Hours A new French law establishing workers’ “right to disconnect” goes into effect today. The law requires companies with more than 50 employees to establish hours when staff should not send or answer emails. The goals of the law include making sure employees are fairly paid for work, and preventing burnout by protecting private time." fortune.com/2017/01/01/french-right-to-disconnect-law/

So do you believe your workers should have to work at all hours the blether...or just when you want them to? My workers are better paid than anyone comparable in my area. I have several who earn over £1000 a week. I also have several that have worked for me for over a decade. They will answer emails after hours. They will engage on social media after hours. They take pride in doing it, such as the guy that secured a £736 order at 11.00 p.m. last night. Forkin beats me how many people can't work it out that money in = better wages. And also beats me how so many people who bottled out on running their own business become instant experts on other people's business.

Well not all are willing to reward as you do. People also need family time...or at least the children do.

Not all companies (government agencies included) pay overtime or have overtime translate in higher wages, promotions, job security. Bleth's a social employer and one of the few exceptions.

But I note his partner had to consfiscate all his devices and send him to bed,,,,,and that was by his own admission

This is funny....workers rights are understood at blether's place....get the orders in and sell or you might not have a job. Most unionised workforces just don't get that....heads in the sand. A fine balance there however....if people are well rewarded they don't mind working hard....and I've met a number of blether's staff....those bstards have got better trainers n watches n phones tban blether .

Don't know about y'all but I'm tired of Me-again Kelly. She is a blatant opportunist but that's like saying water is wet when it comes to these talking heads on TV.

Weren't the French the first ones to introduce the 38 hour working week as well ? Do they need more time to eat snails, drink wine and flirt ? Funny how things change when you work for yourself, there are no rules. I remember when I first started my website in CR years ago, answering emails from customers in the USA and taking 50,000 baht orders at 2.00am in the morning. Wife was quite happy for me to be on the computer at that hour. Also wife and I packing orders on the back of our pickup at midnight, getting ready to send away the next morning. I spent the bulk of my working life in Australia working for myself as a contractor, doing 70 hours a week regularly, as a lot of others did as well.

As a teacher in England some days I would be working up until ten at night. The work and the salary were not connected in my thinking. I had to do what needed to be done. If I needed to phone someone (the days before e mails) to get some information, I did. Likewise I received calls at home, work related. In Thailand, certainly e mails coming in and out at all hours. Being up to date with changes in plans for the next day vital. No good turning up in the morning to discover that arrangements had changed and all those plans were useless, as I was to be teaching a different class. Agreed, this French ruling is crazy. Addition: I was a float teacher, most often covering for the class teacher's preparation time. A luxury I might add I never had in England. If a teacher called in sick , then those arrangements changed. The sick teacher, if still conscious, would e mail me and give an update as to where the class were at and the relevant lesson plans. All lesson plans had to be in place a week in advance and modified daily. If you are professional, whether a lowly worker or higher up; the advantages of e mail updates out weigh the dis advantages.

^^ Yes, yes, and yes.
Smokie has met my staff, guys who go wandering around on international holidays and drive mercy, beamers, and assorted Ninja's.
They'd laugh in me's face at the idea they were being cruelly treated.
They also know that when I'm in country I take no time off and often pull 16 hour days. As well as banning them from the work Internet when I'm online. You guys can see how often I'm online every day.
But they know I have to sleep. So they get my back when I'm sleeping.
Any employee worth their salt working for any company worth it's salt would be happy to spend a few minutes in the evening checking social media and emails.
As Buhi said, professionals get ready for the next morning - and they sleep easy for it.
Fork wits show up unprepared, and burn an hour of production time catching up. Then wonder why their customer service ranking plummets, and the phone stops ringing.

By the way, the one thing that drove me wild with new employees was them showing up, declaring they were hungry, then going out to buy breakfast.
This was a carry over from the unionised places where and eight hours day would consist of a morning break, lunch, and afternoon tea.
And the phone went unanswered. The deliveries piled up outside. The customers went nuts as they were kept waiting for their orders.
So what did the cunning Blether do? I gave an incoming calls only phone to these employees, and told the customers to call them direct.
Waiting for your delivery? - here's the drivers number.
Waiting for your fitter? - here's the fitters number.
So what happened? The employees got fed up with chasing their tails, got fed up with screaming customers, and did exactly what I wanted them to do.
The night before, or first thing in the morning -
"Is that Mrs Smith? You're the third delivery/fitting today. You won't see me until 11.00 a.m. at the earliest - so if you want to take the dog for a walk or pop down the shops, go ahead. I'll see you soon."
The customers love it. As a customer, so would you.

There is a big difference between working hard for good money and being looked after, and being overworked and taken advantage of. This bs about stopping work emails after a certain time will bite them on the arse one day and cost them a lot of money. Maybe the wowsers in the French government will bail them out. Someone once asked - "Why is it the hard workers have all the good luck" ?

The only reason I can travel so much is because I pour resources into my employees. And they keep the money churning. Fair deal.
