Been looking at pics on Facebook of the latest bar in Issan which was opened by the young 30 something girl who's dad is my mate .
He's my mate cause he speaks better English than my shitty Laos, which btw is easier to speak than Thai. I only buy beer from him cause he and his lovely wife's shop has anything and everything you'd imagine.
Cut to the shit, the daughter turned another section of this shop which would be as big as a house block, into a bar that now serves maybe 15 villages, that makes it the only bar for 20km.
So now my corner shop has turned into an after hours shit fest is the result and let's face it, issanites can't handle the booze let alone majority of Thais
Bit that cracks me up is the owner, which is the daughter gives out credit but then smashes the non payer on Facebook the next day if they don't pay.
I call it a village entrepreneur that's asking for trouble who'll find out the hard way the night someone gets shot
I'd never open a Thai bar
Would you?

No way would i ever want to own a bar here. Probably 15 years ago I might of had a fantasy of doing it, but it's bloody hard work, and often little reward. Just got to see how many bars fail. I have even seen good bars fail, we had a really nice place open nearby back in September. Aussie guy, it was a good place for me and the family and friends as food was reasonable priced, staff were nice, good sports coverage and it was well laid out. Up until Christmas it was doing well, then the wheels fell off. Last week it closed.

I'd never go down that path personally but I'm not local

It is not a place to sell drink (or women) it is a place to facilitate socialisaton. Few Bar Keepers can maintain their interest in this for more than a year

Own a bar here? Bars need hard work and thinking "I've got enough mates, friends, etc." is the first step to ruin. I could easily see myself becoming my biggest customer as well and that would not be good.

I know the area, unfortunately. I had one Aussie mate living in Chumphae and another living north at Non Sung, right at the top of that big lake. Used to visit them via road 228 I think, went right through Si Chomphu District. Nice place to visit.................................................
( Chumphae itself is a dead shithole)

Sounds like a disater witing to happen, the natives getting whoopped up on lao kao and knocking shit out of each other, she put a big sign on the wall that reads, cash only, but that wont stop them from trying it on.
Probably advisable not to have a big screen telly to show football, thats usually the first thing to get trashed after somcahi has lost his weeks wages betting on a match.
Happy days indeed, only for the brave of heart or the certifiably insane.

Just coming from the other side I feel a need to state that I respect Thai culture and wouldn't want to oppress the local population or even force my cultural thinking on them. I'm afraid that rules out owning and running a profitable bar in the neck of the woods

I opened a ladies only bar near Roi Et with my business partner last year and its doing a roaring trade in expensive cocktails.
No problems with bills being paid on time or fighting.
Who'd have thought the Issan ladies would be into a Bowie theme bar?

Who'd have thought the Issan ladies would be into a Bowie theme bar? "Ladies only"? That's discrimination. Still, if I buy a nice dress (and wear it) will I be allowed entrance ? Mind you, only worthwhile when the bar also serves beer and some whiskeys
