Kids at school age. The weather. Income.
Australia for me with extended annual holidays in Thailand, for now.

Whats your circumstances right now ?
A big negative for Thailand if you have kids is education, unless your springing for international school

Difficult question that one, on a par with how long is a piece of string ? I'll have a ponder about this one.

Home country: US
For: girlfriend (her home, friends and family)
Against: everything else (subject to the country you’re leaving). OK maybe not. The living expense can be less depending on your comfort level
If it wasn’t for the girlfriend I would only holiday in the country (and vacationing in Thailand would be a Big “maybe”). I’ve seen more than enough already.
By the way,.......If I had school aged children I wouldn’t let them step foot in a Thai classroom.

The only advantage of moving your family from Australia to Thailand is for the perceived pretentious status of telling your Australian friends that you have moved your family from Australia to Thailand. Makes absolutely no sense.

All I can or will say is, ''life is what you want and how you make it work for you.''
The post above from rgs2001uk is probably near the truth for some but not all.
I came here as part of an old long term plan made with my first wife when she was still alive. At the departure time son number one was off to uni and financially and emotionally sound, I took early retirement and fulfilled the dream, mind you it could have been a nightmare all those years ago (25+) .
I came and I enjoyed life,no aims to settle down let alone start a family again.
However met a decent girl lost my heart and have never regretted it.
However, had that not been the case, I may well have ended up a bitter twisted old man instead of a likeable old fool(I hope) or moved on or popped my clogs, who knows.

^^^^ you are correct, but theres a reason stereotypes exist.
I could add, if your marriage aint the strongest, dont move here, I know guys on their second or third Thai wife.
Funnily enough, the happiest guys I have met here are the single guys now living in Pattaya.
Phrases such as, worst mistake I ever made, glad to be shot of that cow and her family, how could I have been so blind, no fool like an old fool, yes I could go on.
The farangs I talk of now live on their own, no woman no hassles, they keep themselves occupied each day, by playing sports, cycling, playing snooker, badmington etc etc.
One of the best I ever heard was a farang who told me the best thing that ever happened to himself was losing his libido, he nows lives on his todd, hasnt had a woman in 5 years, he aint interested and his quality of life has improved dramatically.

What sad comments. Education for offspring, yes very poor. Family life, very good. You have to pay for a modicum of education in Thailand. Then a stunner, like tonight, "No dad,I was using the Latin,". Well F me with a barge pole.

And of course "Hard Times".
The greatest first chapter opening. The irony shrieks out of the page.
_SOWING_
CHAPTER I THE ONE THING NEEDFUL
‘NOW, what I want is, Facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts. Facts alone are wanted in life. Plant nothing else, and root out everything else. You can only form the minds of reasoning animals upon Facts: nothing else will ever be of any service to them. This is the principle on which I bring up my own children, and this is the principle on which I bring up these children. Stick to Facts, sir!’
The scene was a plain, bare, monotonous vault of a school-room, and the speaker’s square forefinger emphasized his observations by underscoring every sentence with a line on the schoolmaster’s sleeve. The emphasis was helped by the speaker’s square wall of a forehead, which had his eyebrows for its base, while his eyes found commodious cellarage in two dark caves, overshadowed by the wall. The emphasis was helped by the speaker’s mouth, which was wide, thin, and hard set. The emphasis was helped by the speaker’s voice, which was inflexible, dry, and dictatorial. The emphasis was helped by the speaker’s hair, which bristled on the skirts of his bald head, a plantation of firs to keep the wind from its shining surface, all covered with knobs, like the crust of a plum pie, as if the head had scarcely warehouse-room for the hard facts stored inside. The speaker’s obstinate carriage, square coat, square legs, square shoulders,—nay, his very neckcloth, trained to take him by the throat with an unaccommodating grasp, like a stubborn fact, as it was,—all helped the emphasis.
‘In this life, we want nothing but Facts, sir; nothing but Facts!’
The speaker, and the schoolmaster, and the third grown person present, all backed a little, and swept with their eyes the inclined plane of little vessels then and there arranged in order, ready to have imperial gallons of facts poured into them until they were full to the brim.

Another reason. Son just back from school. Mother asked him if he was going with her to ban yai, reply, no, staying with dad, in my room. Careful, that was too out front. He is a good lad, never tries to deceive me, knows it would be futile.Keeps his face ache page open to me. It would seem from some postings i see i should have a word with him. I do in my subtle way.
