I saw kids swimming in the khlong inside CM airport today. Got me thinking of strange places to have a swim. I bet our Australian contingent have a few stories

Worked on a 73' prawn trawler in the Gulf of Carpentaria, NT and WA in 1983-84. Had to do some work on the boards hanging off the end of the boom one day, myself and one of the other deckhands decided to have a swim afterwards as it was so hot. I think we were somewhere off the NT coast. Skipper was up in the wheelhouse on the top deck watching us and giggling to himself. Asked him what was so funny and he said "I wonder how long it will take for that big hammerhead shark that is circling the boat to realise you idiots are edible" Well that put an end to the swimming and when we went up top to have a look there was a bloody big ugly hammerhead circling the boat.

During the 1974 floods in Brisbane I swam through my sister's house, in through the back door and kitchen up the hallway to the lounge and back out again. Seemed weird at the time but it was even more weird years later when you were sitting at the kitchen table having a beer thinking "I swam through here one day". Also during the peak of the flood we were in a boat going down her street and we could see the tops of the power poles. Found the wires about a meter below the surface and walked from pole to pole along the wires the length of her street. Thought this will be the only chance we ever get to do this ! This is the street, just got this image off Google Street view. Logan Avenue Oxley, runs from Oxley Road down the Oxley Creek, just behind Ron Wanless's wrecking yard. i65.tinypic.com/29d91dg.jpg

Strangest place I swam? Maybe near the Causeway after I managed to capsize a hobie cat Trinidad was nice, I think it was Maracas Bay. Didn't see sharks but had a 'bake and shark' (like a shark burger)

Las Cuevas up the road is a better and real beach....Maracas bay is man made...although the 15 foot waves offer a real exercise hour!

I was on Trinidad for three weeks for a project, back in June/July 1993. Very stressful, not enough sleep. A chap at the Republic Bank of Trinidad had pity with me and on a Saturday took me to Maracas Bay. The local manager of my company had us at the race track one Ssunday afternoon I think. Most days back in the hotel we sat near the pool, had a beer and went to our rooms to fall asleep. I don't think I had more than two or three rum 'n cokes in three weeks.

I have mentioned this before, if anything ever happened to my mrs thats exactly where I am headed for, hot women, hot food, killer ganj. Plus they love cricket in that part of the world.

The smoke is truly ridiculous rgs....expect to be completely stoned for hours from a small joint.
The puncheon rum is truly to be avoided....saw a guy loaded on the back of the egg truck and carted off before the morning doubles run!
