I know over booking is common, and I don't know if they offered a bribe for people to volunteer. However putting staff before customers is stupid. Years ago I'd confirmed my flight on Thai back to London, to get to Don Muaeng and find the flight full. Friday flight, had to be at work Monday. Car was at my brother's in Basingstoke. I was asked to come back next day. I explained the work situation. They put me on a Paris flight and then B Mid to Heathrow. A Fokker jet, damn scary when it banked to turn, and you are looking straight at The Channel water.

They offered him $800 but he was a Doctor on his way to see his patients, so they decided to use violence. Disgraceful.

In the past there was a policy to offer a modest compensation to find volunteers to rebook, and then if no one took the offer, they would increase the offer in stages until someone volunteered.
That's what should have happened here. Granted that overbooking is a necessary dark art of airlines, but when the company predicts wrong, they need to pay for their mistake, not an unwilling passenger. Come on, if they had offered $1,500 in flight vouchers, surely someone would have volunteered. Even at three times that amount, it would have been better than this ugly behavior, on display for all the world to see.
And when the flight is overbooked, figure that out *before* the passengers are already in the plane.
Yes, disgraceful.

Any airline company should have the software sufficient enough to prevent double booking, it's 2017
In the event of a double booking, which should never happen in the first place, the first person to check in has the seat, simple
Most airlines do it, but use their own method and it's shit when your on the end of it

A woman had checked in a little before closing with 2 young children. They had no choice but to separate them, but instructed the cabin crew of the situation. Once safely airborne, the crew came round looking for volunteers. Obvious choice was an old German. He was sat in a 3 seater alone just in front of me and 2 Canadian girls. Couldn't see the movie. Crew asked him, he didn't like movies, he did like kids. Sit them with me, he says. A tone which made your flesh creep. The crew went away and I decided if the 2 girls would move I had no problem. They came back and established I was alone, they were together. When asked they hesitated. A bottle of champagne each swung it. They looked at me, and said I made up my mind when they asked the idiot in front. I also got the bottle. Present for eldest brother's 60th.

American Airlines [sic] in general suck. I'll take a domestic flight on Alaska Airlines over Thai Airways any day.

The only way this will hurt United is if shareholders react badly. Sadly so far they haven't.

American Airlines in general suck. US airlines for the most part suck, with the exception of one flight cant think of a single pleasant experience flying in the US, if it wasnt the airlines themselves , it was immigration / security The only real memorable flight i had was flying Continential to Bangkok when i left US to start work in Thailand, got on a plane on the East coast of the US , flew to Detroit, Tokyo, then BKK, got talking to a girl who wad a stewardess in Detriot who just happened to be working the Detroit Tokyo leg, so she took good care of me keeping me supplied with lots of alcohol on the flight....but never again

I have enjoyed many pleasant flights on U.S. airlines, and don't hesitate to book another.
I am a happy camper, and that goes a long ways, on airplanes or off.
When people treat airline staff like servants, they get what they deserve.
