Australia Tightens Rules on Worker Visas as Unemployment Rise Australia will tighten temporary skilled migration visas, scrapping the current 457 program used by almost 100,000 people, as the country’s labor market weakens and anti-immigration sentiment spreads among developed nations. The migration system has to be “seen to ensure that Australian jobs are filled by Australians wherever possible,” Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told reporters in Canberra Tuesday. “That foreign workers are brought into Australia in order to fill critical skill gaps, and not brought in simply because an employer finds it easier to recruit a foreign worker than go to the trouble of hiring an Australian.” www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2017-04-18/australia-tightens-rules-on-worker-visas-as-unemployment-rises

................"Turnbull is struggling in opinion polls nine months after scraping an election victory with a razor-thin majority".....................
I see it as Turnbull desperately trying to be "liked".
And if they stopped the 457 visa law tomorrow the following day you would hear employers complaining about not being able to find enough people to fill job vacancies.
......................"Applicants will be required to have a higher standard of English and undergo a full police check".......................
That should be the case anyway ! I have to have a police check done just to obtain a 12 month marriage visa for Thailand.

The Hurricane is on a Working Holiday Visa. She's a type of accountant ( not a CA ) and she has been offered a job by a company who are DESPERATE to fill an essential position. I'll message her in a minute and ask what happened today.
Skilled workers like her are essential.

Current 457 visa holders won't be affected.

Last October, before I left Australia to go back to Thailand I took all the paperwork that I thought I needed to obtain a one year marriage visa into the Thai Consulate in Brisbane and they said I needed a police criminal history check as well. It is not listed on their website but that is what they wanted. I emailed them a few days before I left Thailand to come back over here to see if they had shifted the goalpost again and they said I need everything listed on their website as well as the police check and bank statements. They still haven't updated the list of required paperwork on their website ! I could do it for them in about two minutes if they like.

I'm on non-B and haven't left the country since April 2002, legally so.

The issue of 457 has been going on for ages. It's the CFMEU that started the push to kick those shitty little Chinese bastids out of the construction industry because the aussie workers have had a guts full of them , and rightly so.

Your non b "expired" many moons ago, your actually not on a visa under an extension of stay The B visa originally got you in the country, and once your extension of stay was granted, your visa for all intents and purposes was cancelled, this is why those working on B visas /WP, if they lose their job they can stay in the country until the visa expires, while an extension holder losing their job must leave straight away or pay for a 7 day extension, but while an extension is valid, the holder doesnt need to leave the country every 90 days, while those working on a non B/WP need to border bounce every 3 months

Thanks Sp, I am taking this all in. The reason I am applying in Australia is because of financial reasons (two years out of work) it is easier to get the marriage visa in Oz, have enough monthly income to qualify, don't have to have 400k in the bank. Once I get it I can renew it in Thailand by showing income statement and I believe I need a stat dec from the Australian Embassy. Hope I have this right.

For married extension in Thailand , if memory serves, either 400k in the bank OR thb 40k/m income and think they may even consider combined total as well, ie your lump sum + monthly must be equal to or exceed 400k

Yes, I think that is the case. Someone told me they signed a stat dec at the Australian Embassy saying that their income was over the min required and CM Immigration did not even ask for bank statements, even though he had them if necessary.
