Ok tech-heads..
I have an important program I need to install, but it will only run on Windows XP, or possibly Windows 7 at a pinch. Both my laptops have Windows 10 installed.
I have googled it and come up with a lot of very big words that I don't understand, like "virtual thingamy", "64 bit whatsy" and "partition sector".
So, in your wise and honest opinion, do I just get a second hand laptop with Windows XP installed, or is there some way of running this old software on a newer computer?

Dear Oldie, us dinosaurs have to "get with it" man ! Read this, it explains how to do it in fairly plain English - www.howtogeek.com/228689/how-to-make-old-programs-work-on-windows-10/I have been a member of this Geek forum for over 10 years now, they are very good at explaining geeky things to old dudes like us, in a way we can understand. I have never had to do it myself but I will read up on it and try to help you out with it if you are still stuck. Note - If the resident geek, The Tulip Salesman, gets involved you will only become more confused.

Ok, the one I am on now (mini laptop, the other one isn't powered up)..
AMD A4-1200 APU. 2G ram. 64 bit.
There are a lot of other numbers there if this isn't enough.
I really need to install the software on a smallish laptop as I will be using it to perform diagnostics in confined spaces.

I will check out your and Lukes links, but am thinking getting a second hand for a few thousand baht might be easier.

I can't find my 2002 Windows XP installation disc but have a hard drive with xp on it, and a carrier to mount the hard drive. Can I extract a recovery disc from that?

Update the machines oldie like I have. No wucking forries now It has been fun trying to get this working and I have learnt a lot, but now that my laptop is all over the pergola floor in a million pieces it is time to do something more relaxing. Like oiling the slide valves on my toy train.

A bit late now but it depends on the version of windows 10 you have. If you have windows 10 pro you allready have the softeare to load windows xp Home edition. I know of a few laptops for sale locally that might have older versions. A dedicated laptop will work better anyway. It was worth trying. Makes me wonder how many gamers have a lot of games that they can no longer play. I never heard of this problem until an (expensive specialised) interface I ordered turned up yesterday and wouldn't install on 64 bit. Great proven software but obviously not adapted yet.
