The requirement each year is to show 800k Baht in your account....its hardly a huge sum for anyone who has worked and crucially saved even a little each year of that working life. Its what the Thai government feels you need to support yourself adequately during that year....anyone who can't afford that simply should be on the plane imho. Smokie these fking losers don't have a baht to their sorry names. They're all in the 800k scam brigade. Borrow 800k , pay a small fee , show immigration, get the next visa....its truly woeful. Immigration have slammed this gate shut square in their faces. Good.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere or the place would be overrun with dossers and chancers. Our opinion on where this line should be is of no consequence. I know people who struggle to fund the informal alternative, but they are far from being a problem to themselves or anyone else. So far anyway.

If anyone here isn't cheering to watch Thailand boot out the rejects that are nothing but a burden on the country then you must be 1 of them. Seriously its about time these fkwits got the boot. All hale the new immigration boss! All I've read on this thread is in support of them. The Issan refugees must be shitting themselves Please quote examples of these people and the total financial burden they place on Thailand.

I do not see the streets here awash with white beggars, nor do I see how western people here are a financial burden on society. It will be interesting to see how much garbage you can spout without coming up with a single concrete fact. And I did not fly here but sailed as a passenger on a containership. Not cheap but very relaxing.

Would having resided in say Khon Kaen in Isaan, and seeking foreclosed properties be the sort of desperate types that you describe?

I doubt many retired folks claim Thai welfare, besides it is a pitiful amount if they do. I don't think 800k is an unreasonable amount, but having to put in a Thai account that has very little protection if it goes tits up is not appealing. Like I said, if Myanmar starts to offer retirement visas I will be very happy.

But if your "reject" is someone who has now run afoul of the system and has been here for some years and has a family, I cannot. Case in point: the Brit who came here thirty years ago and has wife and children and settled status but who now finds himself not qualifying for residency by virtue of a poor exchange rate, some compassion and understanding is required in some cases.

I agree with this....some have been here a very long time and seen their fortunes in recent years dwindle to desperation. Others have drunk or squandered fortunes through wives or dumb business ventures. Anyone destitute or close to it now is up the creek.
