The famous quote "people come here to visit temples" was that said when the 14.00 to 17.00 restriction was introduced? Or was it already in place? Trying to explain the vagaries of the laws to first time visitors, and would appreciate any contributions. Ta

My understanding is that the sales restrictions were introduced by Thaksin because of his personal animosity towards Dhanin Chearavanont, owner of the 7-11 franchise in Thailand desire to promote Buddhist values in the Kingdom.

Thank you AyG, I could not remember if the statement referred only to the curtailing of late night opening hours or to the afternoons as well.

It was Minister of Interior Purachai (aka Pure-as-Snow) who made the famous observation of tourists going to bed early as they wanted to be at temples 06:00. Maybe made in 2001 ??

Ta rubes, but was the afternoon closing already in place do you remember.
Anyway I will tell them that's when it started. They won't know any different. As an experienced bullshitter once said "if you don't know it make it up, if you don't know it the chances are nobody else will either". I always try to be factual and if AyG says it was done under Thaksin that will do me.

As I recall prior to the Thaksin era there were no restrictions on alcoholic beverages sales at all, apart from the age limit which as per Thailand was a purely academic exercise.
Mind you even now the local mom and pop shops often take a somewhat flexible albeit furtive view on alcohol sales on the dry days.

Ah SPolee, that reminds me of the times I got a few bottles wrapped in an old newspaper to keep them 'safe'

I remember my early days here, being confused by being told the legal closing time was (whatever) but there was no official opening time.

Of course in those days if one frequented a bar or bars on a regular basis, a code was arranged so as one could gain admittance to such establishments in which one was known.
Prince of Wales on the old Washington Square was my regular watering place.
Pieer the mamasan and owner of the bar, had at times her son and daughter in law in the bar on restrictive days, he was a police captain, never any problems there.
Great place once one was established in there, you could and I among others too could and did tab your ale, your food(which was excellent) and your recreational lady friend too. Late 1980s to late 1990 was indeed a great time.

Someone should tell the locals up my way you cant buy beer between certain hours, they sit outside mom n pop stores at all hours.
Can never get my head round that one, cant buy beer in a restaurant, but can buy beer in a bar.
Why are the bars allowed to sell beer between 2 and 5 pm?
Ah the days of stumbling out of the Offshore at 8am in the morning, tuk tuk to the Nana for brekkie and in bed by 10 am, sleep all day, wake up at 5pm and do it all again.

Ha ha I started this after two South African friends landed in Phuket and at 3.00 p.m. could not get a few Chang from 7 to help them recover from a tiring journey. I suppose they were feeling too grumpy to pay bar prices. Probably a "culture" thing, when I fancy a few my instinct is to head to the pub, for others they prefer their own four walls.

"Why are the bars allowed to sell beer between 2 and 5 pm?".
Easy answer: They are not allowed, the law says nobody can sell alcohol during those hours.
Try getting an afternoon drink in Chiang Mai (or Nakhon Sawan).

Isn't this nonsense subject to the proximity of a school?
