Macao is Sin City full of crims, mafia types and triads on the run from the HK law enforcement agencies as there is no extradition order between the two SAR regions . Any vice you want to get into go to Macao. The stories I could tell. It has very deep, dark undertones.

Its going to be a New Year four day trip with my gf....so not planning much gun running or drug dealing while I'm away.

Macau is becoming a plastic nightmare and prices are on par with HK now. There won't be much to do if you dont like shopping or gambling. HK on the other hand has plenty to offer and Macau is only an hour away. Is it your girlfriends first trip to the delta ?

Go to HK, worth a visit, Macao in the New Year I'd personally avoid it. Every crim and his dog is there for the parties. Years ago I was there with friends and this guy pulled a knife out on us as we were leaving a club halfway down a street. Gave him wallets/mobiles and he ran away only to be tackled by a couple of bouncers. Druggie more than likely as this was brazen and in a well populated area not a sleazy alley.
Watch yourselves.
Agree with onionluke. There's a gambling boat that comes from Macao to HK harbour. Organized gambling is illegal *cough* in HK for HK300 entry you get on this boat and it goes around the harbour all night drinking and gambling. I haven't been but it's supposed to be an interesting experience if it is still operating.

Don't ever knock hairy crabs me, they're a delicacy. Unless the reference is to something else in which which case The best hairy crabs are to be found in a lake near Suzhou and they are Shanghanese not Cantonese hairy crabs. I was on a flight from Shanghai once in hairy crab season and people were smuggling them in their carry bags half frozen to keep them quiet. If you've never tried hairy crabs put them on your bucket list as foods you must try. www.scmp.com/lifestyle/food-drink/article/1867457/five-restaurants-hong-kong-get-your-fill-hairy-crabs

I'll be in Hong Kong for a week in March, and I'll overnight one night in Macau.
IMO Hong Kong is an unmissable World City - a truly outstanding place.

International city indeed, great place. If you show up in March drop me a line, I have a bottle of Black Label behind the bar in Mes Amies for friends to share but I can get Jameson's if that's your poison.
