Anything would be better than Glaswegian. Glasgwegian is far from the least intelligible accent in the English speaking world. Far. I'd agree with that. But as far as unintelligible Philippine isn't even int he running.

I find the Filipino accent quite charming.
My personal hell is a Dundonian accent...really if broadly spoken THAT is intelligible.

I hope the Thais don't pick up the PI aceent . It sounds like Kermit the frog singing Unchained Melody into Karaoke machine. Anything would be better than Glaswegian. Well done cmk in picking a clip of an uneducated , underprivillaged youth, who despite his circumstances is trying to better himself and even if he gets out of his dire situation I doubt he will be heading over to teach English in Thailand with or without a degree. Anyway , for the record. I have no dislike for our Philippino brothers and sisters and have worked with many over the years and even if some of them come across as chancers I can't begrudge them that drive and willigness to work. I will be going for end of year drinks next week with some of my PI degree holding work buddies and I will play them your clip for the craic. God give me the strength to avoid picking up their awful accent. However not all PI folks are in such a position and it is in societies , like Hong Kong, where accomodation is cramped , maids are bound by law to live in with their empolyers, poorer and browner people are seen as lesser beings and there is a language barrier that abuse is common. I am not saying that your servants in Thailand or USA have to sleep in the toilet or the balcony or under the kitchen table , nor that they suffer beatings , torture and starvation but these atrocities happen in "Asia's World City" where "Wonders Never Cease" ,regularly. ( Any one remeber the wonders never cease brand ? )

( Any one remeber the wonders never cease brand ? ) Not liking a persons accent or color of skin or shape of eyes all comes under the same heading. It is what a person says or does that makes them good or evil - what accent used as long as communication occurs is best left for the bullies in bar brawls. You of course are a stout fellow because you have some Filipino friends as if that makes the derision of their language accent somehow OK. Filipino accents are understandable by anyone who speaks English as opposed to some Irish and British ones which in my opinion is the only factor in evaluating a dialect. I'll enclose a clip of my accent for your perusal There was a thread on that other site which is typical of the genre - "Where can I find light skinned Thai girls?" Accents are a result of many things. I can tell if a girl worked in a bar of a fellow was raised in a slum. Those evaluations of language I think are different that what you are saying you don't like about people from the Philippines. I find it embarrassing that the cu** word is used so freely among a certain class of expats and one of the reasons I don't take my wife to many expat gatherings.

^^ "Filipino accents are understandable by anyone who speaks English as opposed to some Irish and British ones which in my opinion is the only factor in evaluating a dialect." Let me tell you as non-native English speaker that understandability depends on what you are used to. As for criteria evaluating dialects, I doubt understandability is really one of the criteria. BTW if you feel like reading a bit en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dialectwww.indiana.edu/~hlw/Introduction/dialects.htmlor more down to earth "Pittsburghese, we're not too nebby" www.pittsburghese.com

^ fair enough cmk, my cheap joke was only that. I will not let my sense of humour give my friends or the PI kids that hang around with my son any sense of doubt that their contributions to humanity arent appreciated by me. In the beggining was the spoken word old chap.

So we have moved on from abusing Filipina maids to abusing and bastardizing the Engrit language. As a non native speaker myself, I taught Lola some French ( my native lingo) it's entertaining to have conversations with a very strong accent in Wanchai markets one place, and have google eyed Cantonese and gweilos tying to figure out where Lola is from. They never peg her as Filipina, after all they don't speaka da French

Few people realize that within the confines of the United States there is spoken today a far greater variety of languages ... than in the whole of Europe. We may go further. We may say, quite literally and safely, that in the state of California alone there are greater and more numerous linguistic extremes than can be illustrated in all the length and breadth of Europe. Three varieties of French developed within what is now the United States in colonial times: Louisiana French, Missouri French, and New England French (essentially a variant of Canadian French). 2 million Americans speak French or French Creole at home. Approximately 337 languages are spoken or signed by the American population, of which 176 are indigenous to the area. Fifty-two languages formerly spoken in the country's territory are now extinct. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_the_United_States#Native_American_languages
