Shouldn't you have the rite to preach in peace to some higher power if you choose?
Live in the belief that when we die, we go to a garden of Eden?
Do unto others is not a bad way to live your life I think.
So why is religion b.s. exactly? .... I need to be enlightened.

You should have the right to any beliefs you want, but where is crosses the line is when people believe they have a right to tell people others are wrong in their beliefs For a person to be moral and just, one doesn't need a religion.
I consider myself an atheist, and don't care what others believe in until they start attacking other people for their beliefs, then I will have something to say.
What is certain, if there were no organised religions throughout history, mankind's "evolution" would have been a lot more peaceful.

I don't agree with the last part. It's a lazy misconception of the role of religion in warfare. Religion was rarely the reason behind war. The majority of wars have been fought through ego, Alexander the Great being histories greatest example. List the wars that were fought for genuinely religious reasons - so few and far between you won't be long with that. Then list the wars that were fought for ego - you'll be here all day.

I think it's all rather silly, but as an atheist I'm not going to waste my time trying to disprove something I don't believe exists.

It's so depressing to believe that there's nothing beyond our life. 'eternal' hope makes things endurable. IMHO PS after years of TVF I have started to believe in reincarnation

Well, if reincarnation does exist then I hope to be reincarnated as myself. Pretty satisfied with life in general.

This is a very difficult thread. I agree with Bleth that most aggression is not religious. It is tribal, and for more "advanced" societies , nationalism. Religion is then used as a justification. Most religions aspire to an ideal; to me that is spirituality, Too complex to define briefly. Great art is religious or as I prefer, spiritual.
I once had a memorable argument over Christmas dinner ,shocked the then wife's sister and her whole "liberal " family that a cathedral was built by craftsmen from devotion. They were not working religiously, but out of their best endeavours to produce an ideal. A place of spiritual essence, an attempt to conquer time and their own mortality. Is such a place worth preserving even at the cost of lives. I say yes.

Were the Crusades not religious wars?
Let's get the Knights Templar involved here!

Were the Crusades not religious wars? Let's get the Knights Templar involved here! They were political wars, faith was not of the essence. As stated, idealism underpins religion and can be a very useful tool in the hands of politicians, kings, egoists. Most people of all times are inculcated, and before literacy had no means of understanding their beliefs. The powers that be will always utilize this naivety. God and country.

Yes perhaps however some of the men fighting were doing it out of religious fervour? I accept the leaders reasons to be political.
