I can't decide -
Winter of Discontent? 78/79 - that was bad.
1981 - Thatchers cuts biting deep/ IRA hunger strikes.
1992 - Black Wednesday? harem scarem.
1996 - Dunblane shootings - traumatic, seriously traumatic.
2003 - Iraq War - disaster from the get go.
2008 - Financial Crisis - painful.
I've missed out Hungerford, Zeebrugge, Bradford Fire, Hillsborough, Lockerbie and various others. All things are personal, in the case of Lockerbie I felt it was something that happened IN SCOTLAND - not to Scotland. Dunblane was something that happened in Scotland, perpetrated by a Scot, to Scots - defo the most traumatic news story of my life.
What affected you most?

For me, the death of Lady Di and the Twin Towers plane crashes.
Both hit very hard because they were the first news I heard in the morning, and both seemed utterly unbelievable. (I was working in Tokyo at the time of 11/9 - hence the "morning" reference.)

25th and 26th April 1994
25th April sitting in the office in downtown Joberg, when that 90kg car bomb went off on Bree Street.. will never forget it
26th April - Another bomb at a taxi rank on the west rand
Thought it was the start of the civil war which had been on the cards

Very difficult question. Was it close to home, I mean familiar territory, where I lived or close by. Then the Birmingham pub bombing was a shock. I knew Irish people in Birmingham and was sympathetic to their ideal of a united Ireland, from a historical perspective. Gladstone tried to give them that in Victorian times.
Lockerbie , as in all probability that plane flew over my house in Cumbria.
As a child I worried about the Cuban crisis, although not directly my country, but an awful reality that frightened me.
Was not a fan of the Falkland fiasco, could have been handled better.
As I said , very difficult as I tend to take a less than nationalist view.

Not trolling, an aside, my style, stream of consciousness.
As a child watching the three helicopters fly over our house, J F Kennedy in one (which?) on route to Birch Grove , Macmillan's house.Thinking of atomic bombs. Strange child.

The miners strike in 1985...watched a whole and proud community descend into anarchy and grinding poverty as a result of ignorant political shenanigans.
Utterly disgraceful...that community is still a mess today.

Growing up The Miners Strike was awful, to see how decent hard wori8ng people were demonised for political gain.
The Penlee Lifeboat Disaster in 1981 always sticks in my mind, as it was in Cornwall and I can still remember the horrible storm that night as i sat at my grandparents house. Truly heroic men, who sad,y never came back.
Watching The Tsunami unfold as i arrived into work on an early shift on that boxing day, knowing that i had put my holiday to Phuket back 12 days due to work issues.
A few others as well which others have mentioned

I cancelled the week before due to a family emergency and lost £700 on the ticket...I was raging until I woke up on Boxing day then It just evaporated into relief.

I guess after that you considered at least cancellation insurance......if not more.....and got another amulet when you returned to Thailand.

(I was working in Tokyo at the time of 11/9 - hence the "morning" reference.) I was online in a social group which had both Australian and US members when twin Towers happened. An amazing (but horible) introduction to the ability for chat to link the world. I ended up having to drop everything and monitor the almost instant international unfolding of the situation as it soon unfolded that two of the members of the group had people in their family working there. (only one lost ) And later direct contact with members of rescue groups. About three days of at least two hourly monitoring night and day (generally 24hrs for the time exceptfor cat naps A bad time in my country....as I do not put borders on relationships. Sad to say in my opininon this is not the first or only example of atrocities by many sides.
