Wiluna Western Australia - what a dump. I actually worked on the mine 10kms from the Township but had to go into town every day. The Club Hotel had to be seen to be believed. It had two bars, one (the saloon) you had to be (well) dressed and behaved to drink in, and the public bar. This bar had a metal mesh grill separating the serving area from the bar itself there being a small hole/hatch in the mesh through which drinks were served and money passed hands. No glasses or bottles, only beer in aluminium cans was sold. No ashtrays, no barstools, tables were solid concrete affixed to the floor. On pension days the large police force were put on full alert. The only town in Australia AFIK that the Racial Discrimination Act was specifically amended for. Off sales to Indigenous persons were forbidden, and woe betide any non indigenous person buying alcohol on their behalf. I was always being pestered to do so but didn't want to risk a hefty fine.

I once stopped at the 'Marvel Hotel Lodgings' is Soi 22. Staying in a low class Chinese tourist hotel during Chinese New Year wasn't one of my brighter ideas. I'm surprised to see you adding this one Tony....the night I stayed I slept like a baby then was served the finest breakfast any man could wish for. IIRC, you paid for breakfast but didn't eat a damn thing. You did take advantage of the draft beer available at the dinning room entrance though. My fine breakfast that morning also included a coffee (laced with Jamesons fresh from the hip flask (RIP)).

Good Gawd Toknarok, you are supposed to be talking of bad places, you have just described my idea of a perfect bar. That's it, I'm currently looking for flights and trying to find the place on Google maps.

You think that was bad...Fitzroy Crossing was worse....a big cage at the back where all the locals drank (this was before any Acts about 40 years ago) and a bar at the front where white people did. We were working in the bush about 200 k from there and as I was sitting in the left seat of the truck as it was my turn to do so I was aproached by this rather nicely spoken 14 year old thinkingI was a boss who apparently had just kept one of the lads happy. She was trying to persuade me to let her come to our camp. She asked me how many of us there were working and I said 6 and she said hmm can handle that but would be better if I bought a friend. Sad really she was a nice girl and nothing more for her than that.

I guess compared with some here I've led a rather sheltered life. Only my 14 months as draftee in the Netherlands Army saw me in some hardship (most of that being sleeping outside while it rained or -15C).

On an Exercise in Sennelager (Germany) had to live and sleep outside in -15 for 5 days/nights. Freck me, that was one of the most brutal exercises that I have ever been on.

Why you think some try to forget smoking funny stuff? I'm not a smoker, I just left

Worst was getting solid frozen bread in the morning as some ... had left the crates outside overnight. Hot coffee with lots of sugar tended to make us accept a lot of that BS though.

My biggest problems were self inflicted. The chain of events that led up to the exercise where best described as a calamity. It's a very long (and funny) story but I'll try and post it on here, if I get enough time to write it.
