Good stuff.
I'm pretty sure they did play Fenders, though.

Good stuff. I'm pretty sure they did play Fenders, though. www2.fender.com/experience/artists/fifteen-strat-players-ages/I have only seen two of these artists play a live concert, that was Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan (within the same week) and I am sure they played other brands of guitar as well, including of course Gibsons, but there are a lot of other factors that contribute to the unique sound these great artists produce, namely amps and how they were used, and the tech people operating them. There will always be a lot of arguments on the subject and it is a bit like saying Ayrton Senna would have won more races if has driving for another team other than McLaren. I found this interesting article on of all places a Gibson website page - www.gibson.com/News-Lifestyle/Features/en-us/myth-busters-stevie-ray.aspxWorth a read, as are the comments below the article - from the article -

People put way too much emphasis on the gear guitarists use - mainly because it sells a lot of fancy guitars, tube amps, boutique pedals etc. But have Eric Clapton play through Neil Young's rig, and he'd still sound like Eric Clapton. Sound comes from the fingers.

String gauge . The sound comes from the vibrating string. I used to play 12 gauge (top E string) on my Hofner Galaxy .It made it difficult to string bend but boyo did that guitar clank and roar.

Thanks for your concern, but I choose my words carefully and know exactly what I mean.

For some reason I am thinking of my old friend "fab4". Have no idea why though.

Some people here think everyone is a reincarnation of someone, as if there were only 12 people on the internet or something.
Guitars and amps are just tools. It's how you use them that makes the difference.

I am here now and I have been staring at my fingers and wiggling them about but they still don't sound like my 1978 Gordon Smith with a single split coil Humbucker. My favourite guitar , sold on like all the others.

It's kind of a middle aged man thing. You see the same thing with photography - people that obsess about which camera and lenses they use, but have no idea how to use them properly or frame a decent composition.
True talent can sound great on a shitty guitar, or take a striking image on a cellphone camera. But it's easier to buy equipment and spout model numbers than it is to acquire skills and find something worthwhile to say with them.

I half agree with you..but if Stirling Moss was to drive some of my old cars I am sure he would drive them way better than me...but would have to far to go to push them across the line as he seemed to like doing. Mine would break down way before the line.

A Rickenbacker sounds nothing like an Epiphone . Anyone can or should be able to bash out a song on a cheapo box and if they have skills and style be creative and entertaining but they can't make that guitar sound like a 1966 Hagstrom.

There's an entire industry devoted to persuading you that you can sound like your heroes if you spend enough money. You won't.

I played my favourite guitar in a few bands in my youth and I sounded like me. There was a long list of influences I stole from but it was all about me and it was all very raw.
