I'd say sounding like you is the best result you can hope for. Nothing wrong with a bit of rawness, either.

A Rickenbacker sounds nothing like an Epiphone . Anyone can or should be able to bash out a song on a cheapo box and if they have skills and style be creative and entertaining but they can't make that guitar sound like a 1966 Hagstrom. Correct. Good friend of mine in Brisbane, Big Al Wheeler, played lead guitar in lots of bands, a lot of Country Rock like Amazing Rhythm Aces, Commander Cody, Flying Burrito Bros, Grateful Dead, and stuff like Lynyrd Skynyrd as well. His guitar of choice, no matter what band he was covering, was a Rickenbacker, because he liked playing that particular instrument. He wasn't trying to sound just like the lead guitarists he was covering, that would be impossible using the guitar and the equipment he had. He had this one down pat -

I played my favourite guitar in a few bands in my youth and I sounded like me. There was a long list of influences I stole from but it was all about me and it was all very raw. At least your mates in the band did not mute your guitar ever time you played it on stage

Ah Rickenbacker, one of the things I loved about early Church albums was that sound. Ref Fender, , I have nothing against them per se, one of my guitar favourites Rory Gallagher used one to great effect. Someone else mentioned rawness, two of the guitarists I could never get into, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, too clinical to my ears. Two favourites of mine, Tom Verlaine and Bill Nelson. But Neil Young in full electric mode with Crazy Horse, unbeatable.

I think one of the best combinations of skill and rawness is James Williamson from The Stooges. Savage stuff. A Gibson, I believe.

You don't see one of those everyday.

It's kind of a middle aged man thing. You see the same thing with photography - people that obsess about which camera and lenses they use, but have no idea how to use them properly or frame a decent composition. True talent can sound great on a shitty guitar, or take a striking image on a cellphone camera. But it's easier to buy equipment and spout model numbers than it is to acquire skills and find something worthwhile to say with them. You do sound like you know what you are talking about. So how much did they get you for ?

My guitar, gibson, stays on top of the wardrobe, has for thirteen years never touched . I told my son he was welcome to play with it. He declined and I know why. Sometimes I play my friend's brother's guitar. But need to be p**sed. Then a few jaws drop.

Bill Nelson, for those who have never heard of him. Must admit I had never heard of him rg, but I had a look at a few of his videos on You Tube, nice sound. Surprised I had not heard of him before.

Now that's a weird guitar. I thought at first it was an Airline of some kind. A little googling though reveals its his own signature model - the grandly named 'Campbell American Nelsonic Transitone', no less.
