It was downstairs for me. One of those buy tickets places Gad Suan Gow is where it was, there's a TOPS supermarket right next to the food court - very near to Chiang Mai RAM Hospital.

Nope, it's all still there - Elvis shows up from time to time, as he would! That's an area that's popular with older expats since there's lots of inexpensive accommodation nearby plus it's close to town and right next to the hospital - the Uni. crowd go to Maya Mall just up the road, much more up market, Gad Suan Gow has become cheap charlie central, free zimmer frame parking et al

I can't recall every having a beer in a food court. Now foe me is the big decision on where to eat tonight after work, that must be infuriating for the cheap charlies. RGS i always remember your quote years back about seeing the desperate, hungry eyes of cheap charliies looking through the widow outside as you tucked into a meal at Tony Romas, <duck>ing priceless

The worst food poisoning I ever got was from a beef tenderloin steak. I spend the next week shitting my pants and the next month living on somtum and bing gai. Even to this day a Thai steak menu makes me dry reach.

RGS i always remember your quote years back about seeing the desperate, hungry eyes of cheap charliies looking through the widow outside as you tucked into a meal at Tony Romas, <ducking> priceless That's funny, but true! One of the first things I glance at in any shopping mall anywhere is the food court, especially in the smaller towns, just to see how many expats are living the dream and drinking Chiang Towers at 11am, 12, 1,2,3,4,5....! We drive down to Sukhothai a couple of times a year and that usually means a stop in Nakon Sawan, the highway goes straight through the town. First time we stopped there not a soul was to be seen anywhere, bloody heck I thought, a zombie town. We quickly realized that the large windowless concrete block on the corner was a mall so inside we went, indeed it contained virtually every resident of the town since it was air conditioned and very hot outside. And true to form, there in the food court with their towers of beer was the expat community, all eight of them, it was soooo depressing. I've often wondered why expats like that come to Thailand in the first place, surely they'd be better off back in Blighty, at least they wouldn't be confined to communicating only with the same six people everyday plus the beers a damn sight better. Ah well, each to their own.

Well the electric went out at 6.30 in our mooban, so we had the choice to wait or go out for dinner. I suggested Big C Food court to the family as a place we could eat and be entertained; the looks from Mrs T and Miss T were enough to make me realise it is not a dinner option. Miss T at 12 years of age said " food court ok for lunch or snack if shopping, but who goes there otherwise?" I didn't wan to get into the Pikey / Scratcher debate, far too busy with work for that I'm beginning to suspect the Robin Hood was your choice as well now!! .

Even to this day a Thai steak menu makes me dry reach. There is an Italian restaurant in CM serving freshly imported NZ fillet steak with fries and salad for 650 Baht. Can BYO wine and they even rustled me up a blue cheese sauce off menu. One of the true gems of CM although some way out of town.

Kelly's fish and chip shop at Meechok Plaza, Ruamchock does a very good cod and chips at 200 baht.
Arco Baleno (Italian) in Watkate serves very good Italian food, the wife took over the business after the Italian chef died and she kept up the high standards.
Nana Bakery, just off the Mahidol Road, sells some of the finest Western style bread in Thailand, alternatively see them at Nana Jungle on a Saturday morning - quiche, croissants and pastries also, first-rate products.
Salsa Kitchen for authentic Mexican dishes, two locations easily found via google, my favorite cuisine of all times and these guys are top notch.
Hinlay Curry House in Watkate, next to Floral Condominium (24 Floor Tower), authentic Burmese and Indian curries, yummy but hot.
Lunch Buffets: Holiday Inn M-F circa 399 baht, Empress Hotel, 299 Baht, both have an extensive range and very good quality.

Jeez I'd rather join the pikeys down in the big c food court tbh.

Thats cheap for a decent steak, and typically the better establishments dont freeze their beef, its chilled, not frozen, as the ice formed in freezing fks up the streak, this is why typically prices are higher...better quality ingredients, cost more, but usually worth it
