I don't see how old folks would get insurance. I'm covered for a lot of things by the military but not all. It would be a shame to kick me out as I spend about a million baht a year here. Seems the Thai government could cover most things (by some kind of insurance charge) to patch up old folks enough to send them home extensive treatment for not too much. Plenty of government hospitals are being left with large bills due to retirees not paying for their care. What's the solution? Death, from a high rise building.
Or perhaps compassion.
Oh compassion does not pay.

Compassion for the poor of Thailand who rely on the state hospital system that is being raped by elderly Westerners?

Rubbish Bleth.
Go back to reading your Daily Mail.
I have lived in Thailand for twenty years (so what). I have twice been an in patient in my private hospital. Once the third party had to pay, road traffic accident, the last time I paid in full, existing conditions.
Well come on Bleth, give us the death pills, I for one would accept them. I do not want my son's house to be destroyed to pay for my death.
I will suffer in silence or jump.

I've never seen (my experience) a Thai hospital getting stuck with the bill. They don't even give you food (my experience) unless you pay. I used to bring food to a Brit who later died in Bang Lamung Pattaya because he was stored on a gurney in the hall and got no food. My own experience with a gov hospital is they wheeled me with IV in arm to the ATM to get money for the day. I had a withdrawal limit. Queen Sirikit hospital Sattahip. I realize it's easy to blame the old duffers but if it was a problem the Thais would take care of it pronto.

Do you believe that?
I suppose all those immigrants are crippling the National Health Service, run by immigrants.
Tosh.

Go back to the original link - hospitals complaining because they are being left with the bill. And mind your language.

If you reside here on a non immigrant visa, then you must prove an annual income.
That is sufficient to pay basic hospital bills.
I have a private hospital, better known as Shangrila. Five star.

Compassion for the poor of Thailand who rely on the state hospital system that is being raped by elderly Westerners? The op (news article) is about young tourists not elderly retirees and the OP is about mandatory travel insurance tabled (put on hold) not about insurance proposed. In other words some literary license was taken in writing the headline as opposed to quoting the news article.

Old tourists travel without insurance too.

First you wrote, "Make it mandatory for people on a "retirement visa" then "the poor of Thailand who rely on the state hospital system that is being raped by elderly Westerners?" I was surprised when I read the article and it said nothing about elderly people. I know I should get used to people attacking old folks. I'll try and be less sensitive.
