While it highlighted a young guy it did not specify an age group. Old tourists travel without insurance too. First you wrote, "Make it mandatory for people on a "retirement visa" then "the poor of Thailand who rely on the state hospital system that is being raped by elderly Westerners?" I was surprised when I read the article and it said nothing about elderly people. I know I should get used to people attacking old folks. I'll try and be less sensitive. Ahem - There is no attack against old people. Merely an observation that people who choose to visit or live in Thailand should ensure that they are properly insured and not a burden on a developing country's hospital system.

So we, I , go through life calculating, no just live.

Death, from a high rise building.
Or perhaps compassion.
Oh compassion does not pay.
Compassion for the poor of Thailand who rely on the state hospital system that is being raped by elderly Westerners? I think raped is a rather emotive word. Like everything else in thailand foreigners are charged. in pPattaya they pay, in bangkock they pay everwhere they pay for their ladies and the very occasional free one hardly makes up. with public hospitals foreigners pay too. in fact they even in public hospitals pay much more than locals. over time these payments help support thais so the free one that rarely comes at the end of life could hardly be carled rape.

I find the whole issue concerning health insurance a trifle trite.
Hospitals in Thailand run the same way as the majority of private hospitals in the U.S.
No insurance, no money no guarantor for the projected costs incurred tough.Go knock on another door.
That applies to the locals as well as the foreigners here.Cases have been noted where a body or rather bodies have not been released due to non payment by the deceased persons family members or friends.
Government hospitals in n my experience have never charged me more than a Thai national for the treatment or consultation given.
I do carry a family health and accident policy thus I am covered, however the idea of mandatory cover and the reasons given are somewhat imaginative in more ways than one .. Considering the location that the issue is being made from says it all. Phuket is a ''rip off'' town, island whatever you like to call it. Thus in reality it is yet another squeeze of the tourists to extort more money to line the pockets of those promoting this scam scheme.
Just read the recent comments cc1 makes regarding Phuket, all the truth concerning the delights of Phuket is revealed or perhaps one should say '' reviled.''.

Many times the doctors are free (pay back for education arrangements). At Queen Sirikit government hospital there is a sign at the Cashier that Farangs pay 50% more (may be more now) it's been a while since I've been there. I remember laying in intensive care all hooked up to wires and tubes having a heart attack at a high priced private hospital and the doctor was talking to my then GF asking if she would guarantee payment.

What word would you choose to describe the foreigners that turn up at Thai hospitals with no intention of paying?

That's like going to a beer bar and asking the ladies for free samples.

^^ The issue boils down to one of personal responsibility.
No amount of stats will undo that.
