Totally agree with that blether. Especially people getting older and needing medical and have no back up. Places like Oz you have Medicare to fall back on and the gov takes care of their own, but in Thailand or anywhere else, why should the social safety net of that country be held responsible for some foreigner who has blown all his chances and ran out of credit? It goes back to personal responsibility. I have stood in Thai training hospitals and watched the poor line up all day in the hope that they will be seen - and sometimes sent home. Poor Thais have no choice. And at root - its the poor Thais that pay the price, as the rich are flashing about in private hospitals. That's life in developing countries.

Don't feel sorry for poor Thais. The 30 baht system is there or 800 for VIP service. Not much different to back home really except back home you get discharged quicker IMO. Here they seem to keep them in longer.
Back to the op, if you're that thick not getting travel insurance after all the horror stories and warnings, you get what you deserve.

It needs to be mandatory same as having drinking time laws etc to stop the stupid people doing their thing then expecting us to foot the bill.
I've never ridden a bike in Thailand...and there are good reasons as to why.
Every year we hear more and more desperate stories....heartbreaking as they are people need to read the small print on their policies.
Those with no policy I don't have any sympathy for at all.

Poor Thais have no choice. And at root - its the poor Thais that pay the price, as the rich are flashing about in private hospitals. The majority of Thais work in industry and are covered by insurance beyond the 30 baht plan. My wife receives free medical care at Sirikit (navy government) hospital and I also pay for her insurance at an expensive private hospital. It's not much. I've been treated at Sirikit (gov hospital)and been with her to be treated there (there is a wait but not too bad) Most of the time we go to the expensive private hospital which is filled up with middle class working Thais who have insurance plans that cover them paid for by their employer. I don't know where you get this rich flash stuff. My suggestion would be to visit Bangkok Rayong hospital next to the largest industrial estate in Thailand and see the majority of people there are obviously working class. All Thais have enough to eat and drink and they have to import the beggars from Burma. If anyone wants a job tell them to come to Rayong - it's difficult to find common laboreres here. Soutpeel lives in Rayong doesn't he? Ask him about the class of people using Bankok Rayong hospital

In my mind I saw a young tourist with zero insurance hopping on a bike then ending up in intensive care for a month while his family beg for thousands of pounds. Its happening out there...sad reality.

It's the price of tourism eh? Does the UK or USA have a mandatory insurance law for tourists or retirees? You wrote, "stupid people doing their thing then expecting us to foot the bill." Are you the us?
